He had one younger sister and grew up working on his father’s farm. The only military history in William’s family was with his grandfather William Anderson (1740-1816) who fought in Captain James Quarl’s Company, 2nd Virginia Regiment and as a Corporal in Captain John Winslow’s Company, 4th Virginia Regiment during the Revolutionary War. Before war broke out in 1861, William worked as a teacher, carpenter, and helped to take care of his mother after his father died in 1850. William, at age 35, enlisted with Company G “the Marshall Riflemen”, Orr’s 1st South Carolina Rifles. He spent his first winter stationed on Sullivan’s Island, North Carolina but was on sick furlough just before the 1st moved north to Richmond in April. He returned to the unit in mid-May to fight at Mechanicsville and Gaines’ Mill. These were his only fights with the 1st Rifles. On July 10, 1862 William was discharged due to disability. He returned home and spent the remainder of 1862 on the farm. In early 1863, war came calling once more and again William joined the fight. On January 13, William enlisted with Company E “McCullough Lions”, 16th South Carolina Infantry. This time he fought in the west at Vicksburg, Siege of Jackson, and the Chattanooga Campaign (Orchard Knob, Lookout Mountain, Missionary Ridge, Ringgold Gap). In early December, William was sick in hospital at Atlanta. He returned to duty and on April 28, 1864 he was made a teamster in the Pioneer Train. He went fought in the battles of the Atlanta Campaign (Dalton, New Hope Church, Pine Mountain, Kennesaw Mountain, Smyrna Campground, Chattahoochee River, Peachtree Creek, battle of Atlanta, and Jonesboro) before heading back north with General Hood for his invasion into Tennessee. Here he fought at Franklin and Nashville before being sent to north east Mississippi to stop a Federal raid. The Confederates and Federals met at Egypt, Mississippi on December 28, 1864. Unfortunately, William was one of the roughly 500 Confederates captured (some of which were Union prisoners who were forced into Confederate service). From here he was sent to Alton, Illinois on January 17, 1865 and then to Point Lookout, Maryland where he was exchanged on February 17. It is unknown if William served through the last couple months of the war. William did return home and settled his own farm. On February 1, 1866 he married the 24-year-old Margaret Frances Drake and had ten children together; four boys and six girls. Unfortunately, none of his sons lived past the age of five. William Austin died on September 8, 1884 at the age of 58. He is buried at Due West ARP Church Cemetery.
