Description	:	William Henry Arnold (“Bill") Arnold, 78, passed away of natural causes at his home in Great Falls, Montana, on April 27, 2003. He was born to Peter Ernest and Magdalena (Wehner) Arnold on February 21, 1925, at the family farm near Gladstone, North Dakota. Like many children born to the Austrian-Hungarian immigrant population of early 20th century Stark County, North Dakota, his first language was German as that is what his parents spoke in the family home. Read More	William Henry Arnold (“Bill") Arnold, 78, passed away of natural causes at his home in Great Falls, Montana, on April 27, 2003. He was born to Peter Ernest and Magdalena (Wehner) Arnold on February 21, 1925, at the family farm near Gladstone, North Dakota. Like many children born to the Austrian-Hungarian immigrant population of early 20th century Stark County, North Dakota, his first language was German as that is what his parents spoke in the family home. He began learning English when he started school at Gladstone’s public elementary school in the early 1930s. His childhood and adolescent years were taken up with school, farm chores, and playing with his brothers and school friends. Shoes and warm clothes were sometimes hard to come by during that time, but it seems that farm-raised chickens/eggs, pigs, garden produce, and wildlife were sufficient to keep the family well fed. Bill graduated high school in May 1944. He enlisted in the U.S. Army on June 22, 1944, at Fort Snelling, Minnesota, and completed Army basic training at Fort McClellan, Alabama, in November 1944. He left the U.S. on December 12, 1944, and arrived in the European Theater of Operations on December 19, 1944. He served with Company F, 138th Infantry Regiment, 80th Division in the European Theater. He was awarded a Purple Heart for wounds sustained on February 6, 1945, during the Ardennes Campaign, and a Bronze Star Medal with cluster for heroic action in the battle of Germany. He was promoted to Sergeant (temporary) on March 26, 1945, and retained that rank until his discharge on March 14, 1946, at Camp McCoy, Wisconsin. After his WWII service, Bill worked with several of his brothers at the Arnold Brothers Service, a filling station, auto repair, and trailer transport service, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He later returned to Dickinson, North Dakota, where he worked in construction and subsequently began a lifelong career as an auto mechanic at Stark Motors and Queen City Motors. He and Irene Agnes Armbrust were joined in marriage at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Dickinson, North Dakota, on May 3, 1950. Rev. Michael Schmitt was the officiant. Dolores Armbrust, the bride’s sister, was maid of honor, and Walter Arnold, the groom’s brother, was best man. Other attendants included John Arnold, the groom’s brother, and Martha Focht, Pauline Wehner, and Frank Focht, all cousins of the groom. Celebrations continued that evening at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Gladstone, where the groom’s parents held a dinner and dance in honor of the newlyweds. In 1965, the family relocated to Great Falls, Montana, where Bill continued work as an auto mechanic at Bison Ford until his retirement in 1989. Bill was a member of the Eagles and Moose clubs. He served as president of the Eagles and instituted the Great Falls Retired Eagles Activities Club. He was proud of his children and grandchildren and enjoyed working on household and yard projects and was always available for consultation and remedies of various car problems. Survivors include sons William, Kelley, and Ryan, all of Great Falls, and Kevin, Maple Falls, Washington; daughters Wynne, Penney, and Darla, all of Great Falls, and Wanda, Tiverton, Rhode Island, Laura, Omaha, Nebraska, and Sandra of Superior, Montana; brothers Ernest (Darlene) Arnold of Benson, Arizona, Frank (Adeline) Arnold of Elk River, Minnesota, John (Dorothy) Arnold of Richardton, North Dakota, Raymond (Barbara) Arnold of Napa, California, and Walter (Clarice) Arnold of Coon Rapids, Minnesota; sisters Anne Haman of Billings, Montana, Helen (Albert) Hassebrock of Dickinson, North Dakota, and half-sister Arlene (Henry “Hank”) Koller of Gladstone, North Dakota; 13 grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Irene on September 23, 2000; parents Peter Ernest and Magdalena (Wehner) Arnold, sister Margaret, and brothers Antone and Peter.
