William was born Jan. 14, 1913, at New Salem, the son of William and Anna (Geissler) Backsen. Raised and educated in New Salem, one of Bill's early jobs was working as a mule skinner in a deep coal mine. He married Adeline Olson June 11, 1943, and was inducted into the U.S. Army in July of that same year. He served as a half track driver in the European Theater and was awarded the Purple Heart, having lost sight in one eye and some of his hearing in a land mine explosion. After his discharge in 1946, Bill returned to North Dakota, where he and Adeline ranched and farmed on the family place, south of New Salem, raising primarily cattle and small grains. Bill was a true steward of the land in his care and taught his sons all of the lessons to be learned through his love of the earth. He also taught his sons and daughter to work and to like what they were doing. The stories he told were many and the grandchildren were delighted by the tales of his life experiences. Bill retired from active ranching and farming in 1975, when he and Adeline moved into New Salem, but his heart remained on the land he had cherished for so long. After his retirement a natural hobby for him was gardening, since he enjoyed working with the soil and watching things grow. He also liked sharing the abundance of vegetables he grew with family and friends. Bill and Adeline liked traveling and enjoyed trips to Hawaii and several other states to visit family. He was a member of Peach Church, a 25-year member of New Salem Fire Department, and had been a member of New Salem American Legion for 60 years. Bill is survived by his wife, Adeline, New Salem; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Toby and Patty Backsen and Jerris Backsen, all of New Salem, and Jim and Judy Backsen, Lake Ozark, Mo.; one daughter, Shelley Backsen and her friend, Dave, Mandan; his grandchildren, Jared Mason and Bridget and Nathan Gerhardt, all of Bismarck, Billie and Curt Leingang, Mandan, Jamie and Travis Hande, Dickinson, Dusty and Mindy Backsen, Mandan, Sydney Backsen, Denver, Ashley Backsen, Bismarck, Chad and Whitney Backsen, Lake Ozark, and Brooke Backsen, Batavia, Ill.; his great-grandchildren, Cauy and Kinley Backsen, Conner Leingang and Cali and Brodie Gerhardt; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Clyde Backsen; his sisters, Anna Neas, Caroline Bareis, Dorothy Toepke and Lydia Blessing; one daughter-in-law, Brenda Backsen; and several nieces and nephews.
