Description	:	William Herman Backsen was born May 22, 1877, in Marne, Iowa, to Elisa Sievers and Jacob Backsen. He came to North Dakota with a brother in 1903 and settled eight miles north of New Salem. He married Anna Baumann in 1905. Twins were born to the young couple. She passed away at Childbirth in 1907. One twin survives, Anna Neas. In 1909, he married Anna Geissler, a seamstress. Five children blessed their home: Caroline Bareis, Dorothy Toepke, William Jr., Clyde and Lydia McIntyre. Five children blessed their home: Caroline Bareis, Dorothy Toepke, William Jr., Clyde and Lydia McIntyre. He was a rancher and cattle buyer for many years. In 1918 with his father's help, he purchased the farm bordering the city limits in New Salem. Here he built a dairy herd and sold milk to the stores and patrons. He also uncovered coal on the farm for our use and to sell to the public. Before the Depression of the Thirties, he had accumulated several more farms and acreages. He couldn't pay the taxes and lost all but the home place. The Depression lasted too long! He had to cut down his cattle herd because he didn't have anything to feed them. He would cut the Russian thistles for feed. Wheat was selling at 34 cents a bushel and he was running out because he tried to supply his rents with seed. Tragedy hit in 1951 when daughter, Lydia, was electrocuted leaving her husband and two small children. Tragedy hit again in 1953 when he was killed in a car-pickup accident at the age of 76.
