He was born at home at Milnerton Flats to parents William Howard and Mary (Reeves) Howard. Henry was the second oldest of five boys. As a child, he attended Mount Pleasant School. As a young man, Henry worked with his Father and brothers on a threshing crew, at a sawmill, running a bulldozer for the county, and his life's work of farming. In 1943 Henry enlisted and served overseas in World War II with the Fort Garry Horse. He completed training and was assigned to drive an amphibious tank due to his experience with heavy equipment. On June 6th, 1944 Henry Howard was one of thousands of brave Canadians to storm onto Juno Beach in France on D-Day. He was a proud Veteran and Canadian. In 1946, after returning from overseas, Henry married Doreen Hepburn. They built a house and a successful farming business in the Knee Hill Valley District. Together, with friends and family they enjoyed many happy times camping, fishing, travelling, playing cards, and community dances. They remained on the farm until retirement in 1973, at which time they moved to Red Deer. In 1982 Henry and Doreen moved to Innisfail, where they would stay. Doreen passed away in 1999 after many years of failing health. Henry made the most of these years staying active with curling and playing golf until he was in his 90's. He was long-time member of the Moose Lodge and the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #104 Innisfail. He was an avid reader and each day his current book was marked carefully in anticipation of being picked up the next day. About 20 years ago, Henry was reacquainted with Betty Howell, an old friend from the farming community. They spent many happy times together playing cards, visiting and dancing. For many years, Henry would drive to Red Deer twice a week to visit Betty. Wednesday afternoons were enjoyed dancing at the Legion. Left behind to celebrate this amazing life, is Henry's sweetheart, Betty Howell of Red Deer. Betty's family who have been so kind in deed, and in including Henry in family gatherings, many nieces and nephews and their families, his Legion family, and friends and neighbours. He was predeceased by his wife Doreen, brothers: John, Roy, Ed and Gordon, and his parents. A Celebration of life will be held August 22, 2018 at the Innisfail Legion, 5108-49 Ave. at 2:00pm. Interment will follow at the Field of Honor, Innisfail Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to The Royal Canadian Legion Poppy Fund (#1 5108 – 49 Ave. Innisfail, T4G 1R1) or the charity of the donor's choice.
