McWilliams had sustained serious injury by the explosion of the tractor engine that he was driving. Mrs McWilliams left at once by auto for his side, Mr. Frey taking her over. The injured man was taken to the hospital in Onawa where everything possible that could be done for him was done. Not satisfied with this, however, he was taken Friday afternoon to St. Joseph's hospital in Sioux City, and the best medical advice obtained. It was found that nothing could be done for his relief there and arrangements were made to take him to Rochester, Minn. but connections could not be gotten with the hospital there, and it was decided that they would take him to Chicago. They left Saturday evening Mrs. McWilliams and sons, Glenn and Harold, and Dr. F.S. Johnson of Sioux City, who was for years the family physician here. Mr. McWilliams was taken to Angustana hospital in Chicago, but here as before, no hopes could be given nor relief obtained, and he passed away at three o'clock Monday morning, October 9. The remains were brought home by the bereaved wife and sons Tuesday morning, the funeral being held from the home yesterday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, his pastor, Rev. W.J. Mitchol, having charge of the service. The Masonic fraternity, of which he was a highly esteemed member, attending in a body and taking charge of the service from the house and at the grave. The pall bearers were Henry Hanson, Joseph Mattes, W.N. Oursler, Charles H Smith, C.C. Coy and Caleb Forbes. A large concourse of sympathizing and sorrowing friends were present at the services, more than could have gotten into either church, a number of Masons from neighboring towns being present. William Henry McWilliams was born June 8, 1864, at Pontiac, IL. The same year he moved with his parents to Crawford county, this state, where he grew to manhood. At the age of twenty-three he moved to Sac county, which has since been his home. April 2, 1891, he was united in marriage with Miss May Quirk, of Clinton township. Four children were born to them: Glenn, of Bruce, S.D.; Harold, who has been assisting his brother this years on the farm and the girls at home Ruth and Rachel. The decedent also leaves 2 brothers and three sisters; Hugh, of Greeley Center, Nebr.; Roy, of Grand Junction; Mrs. Nash, of Redfield, S.D.; Mrs. E.S. Combes, of Lincoln, Nebr., Mrs. A. Townsend, of Doland, S.D. and Mrs. Nash were here for the funeral, Mrs. Townsend and children and husband not reaching town until last evening. Other relatives present were Hugh McWilliams and Mrs. Henry Stater of Denison, Dr. John McWilliams of Charter Oak (cousins), Mr. and Mrs. William Caine and Mr. and Mrs. Harry Caine of Paullina, Dr. George Crane and wife of Holstein, George Quirk and wife and Jerry Moore and wife of Schaller and H.M. Hayes of Rapid City, S.D., relatives of Mrs. McWilliams. Glenn's wife reached here Tuesday noon from Bruce. The accident which deprived Mr. McWilliams of his life was one of the unaccountable happenings which no one can foresee or guard against. Mr. McWilliams was sowing a three hundred acre tract of winter wheat, and was running gang plows with a tractor. An explosion occurred which blew out the cylinder head, the same striking him in the abdomen, throwing him quite a distance. His son Harold who was working in an adjoining field immediately came to his rescue and found him with the three hundred pound weight on him, which he immediately removed and summoned assistance in further caring for him. He retained his mental faculties all through the suffering, but it was known from the first that there was no hope for his recovery. Rev. W.J. Mitchell took the little girls to Onawa Friday afternoon, their grandfather Thomas Quirk bringing them back in the evening. Rev. Mitchell accompanied Mrs. McWilliams to Sioux City and remained with them until Saturday evening. The McWilliams family moved to town a year ago last spring from the farm in Clinton township, where they had resided for many years. The decedent was a member of the Presbyterian church, having joined the church at the age of sixteen years. He was an elder of the local church, taught the men's bible class and will be greatly missed by that institution. Rev. Mitchell spoke very highly of him, his devotion to the church and all things pertaining to the kingdom. The sympathy of the community goes out to the bereaved wife and children.
