Description	:	William Henry Searles was born in Hinckley, O., August 25, 1837, and died in Longmont, Col., October 8, 1923, aged eighty-six years, one month and thirteen days. When he was fourteen years old, he accompanied his parents and seven brothers and sisters from Ohio to Pecatonica, Ill., where the family made their home eleven years. His father passed away when William was eighteen, soon after the Civil War broke out. Read More	William Henry Searles was born in Hinckley, O., August 25, 1837, and died in Longmont, Col., October 8, 1923, aged eighty-six years, one month and thirteen days. When he was fourteen years old, he accompanied his parents and seven brothers and sisters from Ohio to Pecatonica, Ill., where the family made their home eleven years. His father passed away when William was eighteen, soon after the Civil War broke out. While the older brothers enlisted in the Army, William remained at home in order to provide for the mother and younger sisters. He regretted keenly that he could not go out and fight for his colors, but the promise he had made his father prior to his death, that he would stay by the mother kept him away. The mother's death occurred in 1906. On December 31, 1862, at Winnebago, Ill., Mr. Searles was united in marriage to Phebe Eliza Jackson. To this union were born six children: Lawrence Lee, of Chicago; George Edwin of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; Floyd and Flora, who died in infancy; Lee Clare of Fairmont; Mrs. C. E. Verry of Denver, Col; there are ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Mr. and Mrs. Searles with their family shipped their chattels to Fairmont, Neb., in 1975, and purchased a farming in Madison township. After years of hardships and struggles, which come to all early settlers, their combine efforts were rewarded in their having a comfortable home and life became easier for them both. They retired from active farming in 1900 and with their daughter moved to Fairmont. After a short time they purchased the south ward school house and remodeled it in to a commodious residence, in which they spent several happy years. The farm home they left in the hands of their son, Clare, who still resides on it. On January 18, 1908, his faithful helpmate of many years passed away and was laid to rest in the Fairmont Cemetery. Mr. Searles was married to Isadore Short of Pecatonica, Ill., May 3, 1910. She died August 3, 1918. they resided three years in Fairmont and five in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., where they owned a home. After her death, Mr. Searles passed his winters in Fort Lauderdale with his son George and family and several summers in Estes Park, Col., with his daughter, Mrs. Verry, stopping frequently in Chicago with his son, Lawrence and family and in Fairmont to visit the old home and to renew past acquaintances. In April 1923, Mr. Searles made his final trip from Florida to Colorado, accompanied from Fairmont by his granddaughter Phebe Searles. He realized his health was failing fast, and after spending a few weeks with his daughter, he entered Longmont Hospital as he knew that there he might obtain the necessary care in his affliction. He remained there until the end came. The constant devotion of his daughter, Mrs. Verry during the last few weeks of his illness was a great comfort to him in his intense suffering. Mr. Seales was one of the founders of the Farmers State Bank of Fairmont, and through his influence, many substantial Illinois citizens settled in Fillmore County when the country was new. He was among the first to run a threshing machine in his locality, and he was a director of the Fillmore County Fair Association during the years fairs were held at Fairmont. Mr. Searles was a man of sterling integrity, a friend to both young and old and he thoroughly enjoyed his friends. Funeral services were held from the Fairmont Presbyterian Federated Church Thursday, October 11 at 2:30 p.m. and were conducted by Rev. R. H. Thompson of Geneva. Music was furnished by Mrs. Virdelia Brown, Mrs. Homer Goodrich, Milton Jolly, S. M. Dewey and Miss Carrie Dewey. Interment was in the Fairmont Cemetery. The pallbearers were Frank Owens, W. A. Lewis, C. A. Cox, J. S. Reel, A. D. Huston, and W. E. Goodrich. Those from out of town who attended the funeral were L. L. Searles, Chicago; Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Verry, Denver; Mrs. E. M. Gates, Exeter; and many old friends and neighbors from Geneva and Madison Townships. Son of Gilbert and Elizabeth (Halstead) Searles, born in Hinckley, Ohio.
