One hand was cut off and both legs were crushed below the knee. He was taken to St. Anthony's hospital where he died Saturday afternoon about 6:30 p.m. He was conscious most of the time from the hour of his accident to the moment of death. William H. Staak was born at Chebanse, Illinois, September 30, 1868. When he was a boy about seven or eight years of age his parents came to this city, where he has ever since made his home, and where he grew to manhood. On September 18th, 1895, he enlisted in the regular army of the United States and served for the full term of three years, being honorably discharged in August, 1898. He enlisted a few weeks later for service in the Spanish American war and was discharged, from hospital in February, 1899, but enlisted again in May of the same year and served until June 23, 1902. From March 1, 1901, to May 21, 1902, he saw service in the Philippines. On his return from the Philippines, he spent three years at home in Carroll and then enlisted again in the regular army, on September 18, 1905. On July 14, 1906, he was discharged on a sergeon's certificate of disability at Wingate, N.M. His character as a man and soldier are attested by the commendations written in pen and ink on each of his discharges, in addition to the printed form of the honorable discharge. The last of these documents bears the words "A faithful, honest and reliable man" followed by the signature of his commanding officer. He was married in Carroll October 24, 1908, to Miss Ida B. Yegge, who survives him with one child, Harold, now four years old. His mother, Mrs. Mary C. Staak is also living, but his father passed away in July, 1909. Of his brothers and sisters the following survive: Mrs. Claret Yegge, of Boone; Frank T. Staak, of Marseilles, Illinois; Mrs. Sarah Kehrer, of Fort Jones, California; John Staak, of Sioux Rapids, Iowa; Joseph Staak, of this city. The funeral was held Monday morning at St. Joseph's church of which the deceased was a member, and Rev. Father McCarty spoke in eloquent and touching words of his life and character. Burial was made in the cemetery of St. Joseph's parish. There was a very large attendance and a firing squad from Company D paid him the last honors of a soldier. The relatives who were in attendance from out of town were Frank Staak, of Marseilles, Illinois; John Staak, of Sioux Rapids, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. J.F. Yegge, of Boone; Mr. and Mrs. Dr. Johnson, of Boxholm, Iowa; and Mr. and Mrs. Albert Yegge of West Lake, Iowa.
