He has had heart trouble and many times the members of his family have watched with anxious hearts his seemingly futile battle for life, but he has always rallied until last Tuesday, when death took him in an illness, which had not seemed as critical as others through which he has passed. He has had heart trouble and many times the members of his family have watched with anxious hearts his seemingly futile battle for life, but he has always rallied until last Tuesday, when death took him in an illness, which had not seemed as critical as others through which he has passed. Mr. Wheatley has made a gallant fight and has born his weakness and suffering with utmost patience. His chief concern in life has been his devotion to his family and this devotion has been returned a hundred fold in the kindly care and attention he has received at their hands during his declining years. Mr. Wheatley took a sudden turn for the worse Sunday, February 4, and grew gradually worse until his passing at 8:30 Tuesday morning at his home southwest of Corning. Funeral services were held from the Methodist Church Thursday afternoon at 2:00 conducted by the Rev. F. G. Barnes. Burial was made in Prairie Rose Cemetery. William Henry Wheatley, son of Edward and Martha Wheatley, was born in Keithburg, Illinois, June 17, 1866, and passed away February 6, 1940 at his home in Corning, Iowa at the age of 73 years, 8 months, and 11 days. He was united in marriage to Miss Flora Sutton on November 10, 1896 and to this union were born ll children. He is survived by his loving wife, Flora Wheatley; his children, Emily, Edward, Hester, William Jr. and Charles of the home, Mrs. Alvin Gray of Lenox, Iowa; Mrs. Harley Christenson of Council Bluffs, Iowa; Mrs. Clayton Sargetnt of Austin, Minnesota; Mrs. Richard Talty of Corning, Iowa, Mrs. Chester White of Kellerton, Iowa; Mrs. Albert Boswell of Corning, Iowa; also two sisters, Mrs. Emily Arnold of Salem, Nebraska and Mrs. Nettie Keithley of Omaha, Nebraska; a brother Joseph Wheatley of Falls City, Nebraska; six grandchildren, Mrs. Robert Callahan, and Mrs. Dorothy Gray of Lenox, Iowa, Robert Edward Sargent of Austin, Minnesota, Joann and Mary Jean Talty and Patricia Boswell of Corning, Iowa; besides nieces and nephews and a host of friends. He moved to Adams county in 1890 where he resided on a farm in Brooks, Iowa. In 1926 he moved to Corning, Iowa where he resided until he departed life. He was a member of the Advent Church in Brooks, Iowa, later transferring his membership to the Methodist Church in Corning, Iowa. Mr. Wheatley was a kind and loving neighbor and was always ready to help in any way needed, and will be greatly missed in the community. Adams County Free Press, February 15, 1940, page 5
