Mr. Duncan was born after his parents removed to this county, on the 9th day of December, 1842, Reared in the county, his educational advantages were limited to the common schools, where, however, he succeeded in obtaining a sufficient knowledge of books for all the practical purposes of farm life. As elsewhere stated, his father is a farmer by occupation, a man of industry and energy, and William H. was therefore brought up on a farm and made familiar by daily labor with the duties of farm life. He thus, when he reached his majority, had formed those habits of industry and obtained that knowledge of farming which have since enabled him to place himself among the worthy, substantial farmers of the township. In consonance with one of the first great laws of our nature, soon after reaching his majority, like the falling of ripened fruit, he was married on the 13th of March, 1864, to Miss Mary J. Lowman, a daughter of William O. Lowman, mentioned below. Mrs. Duncan is a lady of culture and refinement and was educated at Wesleyan Female Institute, in Augusta county, Va. Mr. and Mrs. Duncan have been blessed with six children: William L., Virginia B., Charles B., Mattie W., Sallie I. and Mary M. Mr. and Mrs. D. are members of the M. E. Church South. Shelby county mourns the death of one of its best citizens. He was a man who lived right in all things. A man whose life was above reproach. His death came rather unexpectedly to the people of the county. He suffered with a complication of diseases, and after nine weeks of suffering, yielded to the death summons and passed away. He died at 9 a.m. Wednesday, July 27, 1898, aged 55 years, 7 months and 18 days. The news of his death was received with much sorrow by all. On account of the sickness of his son, Charley, no funeral service was held, but will be held later when the sick son is able to attend. Instead of a funeral discourse a memorial service was held at Duncan Chapel at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 28, which was attended by an immense crowd. The services were conducted by Rev. J. D. Hunt of this city. Rev. Ramsey led the opoening prayer. Short talks were made by Revs. W. W. McMurry, Geo. Warren and J. D. Hunt and Hon. J. T. Lloyd. They all dwelt upon his manly, christian character. After the services the casket was opened and all present viewed for the last time the remains of the noble man. The body was brought to this city and laid to rest in the I.O.O.F. cemetery, beside his two daughters. The procession was the largest that ever left the Duncan Chapel neighborhood. Judge Duncan, aside from his christian life, was a useful man in the business world. He was at the time of his death serving his second term as a member of the county court from the 1st district, and was the nominee of the Democratic party for presiding judge of the county court, and had he lived would have been elected next November and taken his seat in his new position next January. He was also President of the Shelby County Farmer's Insurance Co., an organization which is growing rapidly. He was a successful and energetic farmer, and a man who will be greatly missed by all the people generally. An extended and well written obituary notice appears elsewhere, written by Prince Dimmitt, who was one of the most intimate friends and neighbors of the deceased. At 9 o'clock Wednesday morning, July 27th, 1898, as the dark clouds were driven from an eastern sky and the morning sun began to send its bright and beautiful rays to all the earth, the death Angel, which had been hovering over the home, came in and the spirit of Judge Duncan left its weary, emaciated confines here and entered the haven of eternal rest. William Henry Duncan, son of Levin and Irene Duncan, was born near Walkersville, Shelby county, Mo., Dec. 9th, 1842. Was married to Mary Jane Lowman MArch 13th, 1864. To this happy union were born six children, two sons and four daughters, two daughters preceded him to the better land only a few years. All the surviving members of the family were at his bedside and witnessed the last scenes of his earthly life, with the exception of Charlie, the youngest son, who was sick in an adjoining room.
