| Description | : | At age 15, William clerked in Manwarring and Hinkle General Store, West Washington St., Sullivan, IN. He was first in his family to enlist in war (musician in 21st Ind. Regimental Band, 1st Coronetist 1862-1864). He also had four brothers that served in the Union Army during the Civil War also. William fought at the battle of Baton Rouge, LA. When he came back to Sullivan, he bought the hardware store of Manwarring and Hinkle.
