Crowder Passes Away Friday Morn Sudden Death Of Well Known Man Causes Sorrow In Community. Funeral Services Saturday Afternoon. Sullivan as a community mourned today the passing of William H. Crowder Jr., for years a well known banker, community booster and fraternal leader in the city. Suddenly and unexpected was the death of the beloved man. His health for the past few years has caused considerable concern to his family and friends but in recent months he was thought to be improving and Thursday he enjoyed an extended auto ride with friends and was visiting with acquaintances in the business districts. Thursday night he was apparently in his usual health and retired to his bed shortly after ten o'clock after talking and joking with members of his family. During the night he suffered an acute heart attack and he passed away about five o'clock Friday morning. Born in Sullivan, Nov. 23, 1868, the son of Mr. and Mrs. W.H. Crowder, Billy Crowder, as he was most generally known obtained his early education in the Sullivan public schools. He began his business career at the age of sixteen in his father's banking house. He became the bookkeeper, which postition he held until he was twenty-two years of age and at that time entered into partnership with J.M. Lang in the clothing business, remained in this business four years when the partnership was dissolved, after which Mr. Crowder went to Linton with his family. Crowder was married in June of 1891 to Earlene Moore. At Linton, Crowder conducted a clothing and shoe store for four years and then he and his family returned to Sullivan, Crowder entering the Sullivan State Bank in October, 1900 and serving that institution first as teller, then assistant cashier and later as cashier for many years, retiring from the bank just a few years ago, when his health began to fail. Politically Crowder was a Democrat and he served a four year term in the Sullivan city council. In the primaries of last May Crowder was nominated as the Democratic candidate for mayor of Sullivan and he was making his plans for an active canvas before the general election this November. Always enthusiastic in the things that he was boosting and noted for his wit and humor, Crowder listed his friends by the number of acquaintances. A member of the Sullivan Elks Lodge, Crowder had some time ago expressed a preference that the Elks officiate when he passed onward. This request was remembered by members of his family and according the funeral services will be in charge of the Elks Lodge and the Sullivan Elks band will play the funeral march and music of sorrow at the grave. The funeral services will be held at the Crowder home in South Main Street, Saturday afternoon at 4:30 o'clock. The body will be in state to the friends at the Billman Funeral Parlors until 11 o'clock Saturday morning at which time the casket will be closed and will be removed to the home for the funeral. Mr. Crowder is survived by his widow, Mrs. Earlene Moore Crowder, seven children, William H. Crowder, III of Chicago, Dan Crowder, teller in the Sullivan State Bank, Miss Doris Crowder of Louisville, Ky., Mrs. E.G. Hofmann of Denver, Colorado; Mrs. Harold Riggs of Louisville, Ky., Miss Elizabeth Crowder and Ben Crowder, at home; three brothers, Ben C. Crowder and J. Harve Crowder, of Sullivan and L.M. Crowder of Boyle, Mississippi and four sisters, Mrs. D.T. Niehson of Indianapolis, Mrs. Kathryn Kirkham, Mrs. Jessie Smock and Mrs. W. Paul Stratton of Sullivan, with a host of other relatives and friends joining the immediate family in their grief. OBITUARY: William Crowder Dies Suddenly Candidate For Mayor Of Sullivan Topples Over As He Sits At Breakfast Table Special To The Tribune. Sullivan, Ind., Aug. 2. -- William H. Crowder, democratic candidate for mayor of this city at the coming fall election, died suddenly at 5 o'clock this morning. He had just seated himself at the breakfast table when he toppled over and expired before the members of his household reached his side. He was apparently enjoying his usual health yesterday and last night. He is survived by his widow, Earline Moore Crowder, and the following children: William, Doris, Dan, Deborah, June, Elizabeth and Ben Allen Crowder. The deceased was a life long and well loved citizen of the city. As a candidate for mayor on the democratic primary ticket last May he received more votes than all of his opponents combined. He was 61 years of age. BIOGRAPHY: William H. Crowder Jr., prominent as the cashier of the Sullivan State Bank, comes of a well-known and highly respected family in Sullivan County, Indiana. He was born November 23, 1868, in Sullivan County, son of William H. Crowder Sr. and wife, whose family history will be found in another sketch within this work. William H. Crowder, of this notice, obtained his education in the most excellent public schools in Sullivan and began his career at the age of sixteen years in his father's banking house. He became the bookkeeper, which postition he held until he was twenty-two years of age. At that time he entered into partnership with J.M. Long in the clothing business, remaining four years, when the partnership was dissolved, after which Mr. Crowder went to Linton, Indiana, and there conducted a clothing and shoe store for about four years. He then entered the State Bank at Sullivan, in October 1900, as the teller of that institution; and also served as assistant cashier. In September, 1906, he was elected cashier of the bank, which responsible position he still holds. He is a stockholder and director in the Sullivan State Bank and accounted a first class business man. Politically, he is a Democrat and has held the office of city counsel four years, and his term of office as such will expire January 1, 1910. He is connected with the Odd Fellows order at Sullivan. He was married in June, 1891, to Earlene Moore, born in Sullivan, October, 1872, and educated in her native town. She is the daughter of Robert A. and Susan (Robertson) Moore. The mother is deceased and her father resides at Sullivan. He is a native of Ohio, and both were among the early settlers of Sullivan. Mr. and Mrs. Crowder are the parents of seven children: William H. III, born August 17, 1892, now attending high school; Daniel M., born April 25, 1894; Doris, born May 1, 1898; Deborah, born April 5, 1900; June, born May 12, 1902; Elizabeth, born April 30, 1904; Ben Allen, born February 26, 1906. ~~ I ONLY LIST FAMILY MEMBERS. ~~
