He departed this life October 28th, 1901, and... Read More	Mr. Wm. Houk at Rest The subject of this sketch was born Sep. 28th, 1852, in Clay Co., Indiana, and was 49 years and 1 month old. He was married to Mary E. Lambert, Oct. 9, 1873, and moved to Kansas in October 1874 and resided every (sic) since on his place on Allen creek, except the first year. His wife died the 11th of January, 1896, and was buried in the Americus cemetery. He again married March the 23d, 1898, to Mrs. Lucy Bain, a sister of his former partner. He departed this life October 28th, 1901, and was buried in the Americus cemetery, Oct. 30th. One son died Sept. 5th, 1878. He leaves behind him his present partner, three sons, two daughters, two brothers, and four sisters. The brothers are Vanness Houk of this place, Wilson Houk of Brazil, Indiana. The sisters are Mrs. Yocum, of Perth, Ind., Mrs. R. H. Campbell, of Cold bluff, Ind., Mrs. R. W. Parkins, Prairie, Ind., and Mrs. James Campbell, Augusta, Ill., the three latter mentioned sisters being with him a greater part of the time during his last illness. The cause of his death was typhoid fever, and at one time he has so far recovered as to be up and around, but he took a relapse and the end soon came. The funeral services were held at the residence, the Rev. F. D. Loy of this place officiating, assisted by Rev. Lukens, and were short but impressive, and the remains were laid to rest in the Americus cemetery, by the side of his former wife. The funeral cortege was one of the longest that ever left Allen creek, there being upwards to fifty vehicles in the procession. He was usually a man of robust health for his age, but had been more or less ailing all summer and had often been warned to take life easier, but so great was his ambition, and always used to an active life, he knew not how to be idle, or how to waste his time in doing nothing. He was a prominent member in the M.P. church, and was an active worker in Sunday school, and all the various branches of church work. He was a member in good standing in the M.W.A. and in the K. & L. of S., carrying a $2000 policy in the former and $1000 in the latter. He was a good and noble citizen, a kind and affectionate father, and highly esteemed by all his extensive acquaintances. He was just that kind of man the the world, the community, the family, and the church could illy afford to lose. One of whose example was worthy of emulation. The sorrowing ones have the blessed assurance that he has gone to a final reward of happiness, and the entire community tender them their sympathy. They mourn not as one not to comforted for they have the sweet consolation that they will yet him where trouble and sorrow, sickness and death, can not enter, around the bright throne in eternal glory. -Americus Greeting, Thursday, 7 November 1901
