Son of Robert Hugh Carlton and Thirza Ivy OBITUARY THE CHARITON HERALD-PATRIOT Chariton, Iowa Thursday, September 22, 2011 WILLIAM HUGH CARLTON William Hugh "Bill" Carlton, age 81, of Humeston, Iowa, son of Robert Hugh and Thirza (Ivy) Carlton, was born December 21, 1929 at home in Humeston and died September 19, 2011 at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa. Bill attended Hi Prairie Country School at Derby and the Leroy School. He graduated from Humeston High School in 1948 and attended Capital City Community College in Des Moines. In 1949, Bill returned to Humeston and worked at the bank in Leon. On October 7, 1950 he married Phyllis Louise Surbaugh at the Humeston Baptist Church. To this union three sons were born: Mark, Greg and Scott. Bill briefly worked in his uncle's business in Fulton, Missouri selling cemetery lots. He returned to Humeston in 1951 and joined his father in business, Yorkshire Produce. Bill continued a lifelong successful career in agribusiness, expanding into feed, fertilizer and chemicals. Through hard work and his outgoing personality, Bill's business grew until he retirement in 1997. Bill was very active in his community - the Humeston Fire Department and City Council. He was a longtime member of Humeston First Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon. He was a 6-gallon blood donor, active in the Masonic Lodge in Humeston for many years, and was a Shriner. The thing Bill enjoyed most was spending time with his grandchildren. Preceding Bill in death were his parents; brother Jim Carlton; and brother-in-law Bill Davidson. Surviving are his wife of nearly 61 years, Phyllis Carlton of Humeston; three sons; Mark Carlton and wife Julie of Albia, Iowa, Greg Carlton and wife Debbie of Chariton, Iowa, and Scott Carlton and wife Cheryl of Centerville, Iowa; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; other relatives and many friends. Graveside funeral services are 2:30 p.m. Friday, September 23 at Humeston Cemetery with Pastor Art Anderson officiating. Arrangements made by Slade-O'Donnell Funeral Home of Leon.
