BEERMAN Furniture Man Stricken With Heart Attack Falls to Sidewalk Monday Afternoon Without Warning; Dies Instantly Guttenberg citizens were shocked considerably Monday afternoon when W. J. Beerman, prominent Guttenberg business man and senior partner of the Beerman Brothers' Furniture firm, dropped to the sidewalk and died instantly shortly after 1 o'clock, the victim of a heart attack. He had apparently been in good health right up to the last. No one could remember having heard him complain of feeling ill and he had been going about his business as usual during the forenoon. His sudden passing was a severe blow to his relatives and his many friends, especially those who happened to be near at hand at the time. Mr. Beerman had just returned to the store, following the noon hour. He walked across the street to the Wardell Chevrolet garage and sat down on a seat beside E. L. Charlesworth and Mayor George Jacobs. The men sat there conversing for a few minutes until Charlesworth arose and stpped inside the garage. He had barely disappeared inside when Beerman leaned forward as if to arise from the bench. Instead, he pitched head-first to the sidewalk. Greatly startled, Jacobs grabbed his friend and tried to arouse him. He called his name, but there was no response. Jacobs calls attracted others and Dr. A. E. Beyer was on the scene in a minute or so, but all efforts to arouse the stricken man proved futile. BORN HERE Mr. Beerman was born in Guttenberg on March 28, 1879, and was 54 years old. He grew to manhood here and was a life long resident of this city. He graduated from the public school and then worked for a time as an operator at the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul depot here. After leaving the railroad company he entered the Clayton County Bank, where he remained for eight years as assistant cashier. Upon leaving the bank he went into the furniture business which he followed for the past 31 years. Shortly after going into business, his store was burned to the ground. The present store was then built and 29 years ago he took his brother, Henry, into partnership and the two brothers added undertaking their line. CORONER FOR 20 YEARS Mr. Beerman served on the board of education here for six years and was coroner of Clayton county for 20 years, retiring from that office following the election of 1930. He was also a member of the Guttenberg Rotary club and was vice president of this organization at the time of his death. On March 30, 1905, he was united in marriage to Miss Christine Krueger. To this union were born three children, Harold, Lucille and Gertrude, all at home. He is survived by his wife and children, his aged mother, Mrs. William Beerman, Sr., of Guttenberg, one sister, Mrs. Robert Scholk, of Guttenberg; and three brothers, Dr. E. A. Beerman, of Barrington, Ill., O. A. Beerman of Mason City, and Henry Beerman, of Guttenberg. Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the family home to St. John's Lutheran church, of which he had long been a member. Rev. W. J. F. Adix will officiate at the services and interment will be made in the city cemetery.
