Description	:	William and Anna Elizabeth (DeWolf) Gilliland William James* and his twin brother were born at Armagh, Ireland, about three months after the family moved from Scotland. They were born on September 28, 1836. Anna Elizabeth DeWolf, the daughter of Robert J. and Anna DeWolf, was born in Erie County, Pennsylvania, on June 27, 1836. They were born on September 28, 1836. Anna Elizabeth DeWolf, the daughter of Robert J. and Anna DeWolf, was born in Erie County, Pennsylvania, on June 27, 1836. The Gilliland family came by clipper ship to Quebec, Canada, from Armagh, Ireland. They ran into a severe sea storm and were blown far off course. It took many days to get back on course. The whole journey took about forty-two days because of that. For Canada, they came to New York. Once in New York, young William got a job as a stable boy. He had so much talent that he was soon promoted to driving the wealthy employer's two daughters to singing and dancing lessons. His driving the carriage, and ability to handle horses and care for them as well as train them, kept him at this job for many years. He also gardened at the estate for his employer there. His green thumb and love of horses furnished his livelihood through his life. William worked at this estate in New York for many years until signs of the Civil War sprang up. As the war years drew nearer, William's employer began making plans to have William enter the war under the assumed name of his employer. This was not yet made legal, and though he was offered two-thousand dollars to do this in case war did come, it so angered William that he left his employment there and went to Illinois. There, he met and married Anna Elizabeth DeWolf. The marriage took place in Boone County on May 25, 1859. They had twelve children while living in the state of Illinois. One child, George L., was born and died in Walworth County, Wisconsin, in June of 1869. The children in order are: Elizabeth born and died 1860; Eliza Jane 1861-1885; Robert J.P. 1862-1920; Samuel M. 1864-1897; William Henry 1866-1940; Sarah C. 1867-1965; George L. 1869, died at three days old; Katie J. 1872-1891, died of heart defect; Hattie I. 1874-1875; John Wesley 1875-1953; Edward Harry 1877-1951; all living in this area, some for the rest of their lives. Some died before coming to Nebraska. They are: Elizabeth; Eliza Jane, aged twenty-four, a young mother, died in Adair County, Iowa; George L. died as an infant in Wisconsin; Hattie I. died at one year and three months in Illinois, as did Elizabeth. Some children lived here for a while and then moved back east, such as William Henry, Sarah C., Mary S., Katie died in the Curtis area three years after coming to Nebraska, at age nineteen. In the early 1880's, the family moved to Adair County, Iowa. Here they farmed and worked near Fontanelle. Their daughter, Eliza Jane, is buried there. One daughter, Sarah, was married there and one son, Robert, was also married there. In 1888, William got out the covered wagon, tied the milk cow on behind and started for Nebraska. They planned to file on a homestead near Haigler, Nebraska, but when they reached the location, they found someone had beat them to it. They then returned to land seven and one-half miles south of Curtis, and remained there until the drought and grasshoppers came in 1893. Things were so bad that the family was forced to go to Chetopah and Coffeeville, Kansas, to get work in the brickyards there. Before going, two sons, William Henry and Samuel, were married. The families returned in 1895. Sam's wife and baby died then; Sam and Will took homesteads, south of Curtis, but because of funeral expenses, etc., more money was needed, so William and Anna and Sam, John, and Harry, returned to Kansas. Sam died of ague fever in the fall of 1897, and the family returned to stay after March 8, 1898, when John married there. Sam's land went to his parents and they sold it for $400.00 to their youngest son, Harry, in 1900. Harry married in 1902. Their children were now married and gone from home. They made their home with their son, Harry, and his family. Here they lived busy and very useful lives until their deaths, surrounded by children and grandchildren. William was able to work with stock and the horses he loved so well. William set out many tree claims in the area for people who needed them, and he and Anna lovingly helped to teach the grandchildren their own special crafts. Anna died July 12, 1912. William died May 29, 1925. They are buried at Lone Tree Cemetery near where they lived south of Curtis.
