Description	:	William John "Bill" Rowan was the oldest living child born to Fannie (Bauld) and Andrew F. Rowan on the William Shields Rowan homestead north of Mills, Nebraska on August 10, 1918. He passed away suddenly from this life on June 25, 2011, at the age of 92 years. His education was received at the Payne school district and graduated from Keya Paha High School in 1936. Read More	William John "Bill" Rowan was the oldest living child born to Fannie (Bauld) and Andrew F. Rowan on the William Shields Rowan homestead north of Mills, Nebraska on August 10, 1918. He passed away suddenly from this life on June 25, 2011, at the age of 92 years. His education was received at the Payne school district and graduated from Keya Paha High School in 1936. Bill worked with his father on the ranch until he was inducted into the US Army on January 7, 1942. Bill was blessed to be one of the 15 men to return out of the 233 that entered the Japanese battle of Buna. They accomplished the first American victory of World War II. His military service took him completely around the globe. After returning home on August 12, 1945, he went into partnership farming and ranching with his father and brothers for several years. In 1967, for health reasons, he left the partnership and took a position with Keya Paha County government, serving as clerk, assessor, judge and veterans service officer for more than 35 years of service to the county. During this time he was active in many community activities and served as president for the Nebraska State Elected Officials. On June 18, 1950, Bill married Donna "Joan" Smith. To this union four children were born – Michael Don on June 26, 1951 – Faye Ann on November 4, 1953 – Terri Jan on November 10, 1955 and Becky Elizabeth on June 26, 1961. Bill was the first 4-H Club leader for the Four Corners 4-H Club. He was involved in all aspects of baseball throughout his lifetime, including playing, coaching, and in his later years announcing games. He taught Sunday School at Brocksburg before the war and was one of the men that laid the cement blocks at the Mills church. He was baptized in September of 2000 at the United Methodist Church. Bill was a devoted member of the American Legion for over 60 years and was proud to raise Old Glory at all home football games. Bill's survivors include: Daughters Becky (Jim) Steele of Eugene, OR – Terri (Dennis) Swanson of Bassett, NE – and Faye (Ron) Braun of Springview, NE and his brother Robert (Helen) Rowan of Mills, NE and his special friend Lou Nelson of Winner, SD. He is also survived by five grandchildren , six great grandchildren and many nieces , nephews and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his wife Joan and son Mike, a granddaughter Jody Rae Braun and one brother Andrew F. Rowan Jr., and two sisters Agnes Graesser, and Marguerite Hulite.
