He was born on Dec. 18, 1926 in Fort Madison to William T. and Eunice Maneely Weiler. He attended the Fort Madison public schools, as he was a lifelong resident of Fort Madison. He married Lucille H. Wagner of Donnellson on June 21, 1947 in Fort Madison. He was of the Protestant faith. He volunteered for the U.S. Navy, and was a veteran of World War II. He was attached to the Seabees, serving as a land-based sailor, mostly in the Philippine Islands. Some of his duties were aboard 25 naval vessels, and at times he was a deep sea diver for the Navy in Manila Bay in the Philippine Islands. He was well known in the Fort Madison area since he worked for the Sheaffer Pen Company, the Santa Fe Railroad, and E.I. DuPont Company. He started out at DuPont as a laborer and worked up to a supervisor, with 36-plus years of service. He had a keen interest in music, poetry, and preparing income tax forms for people for over 32 years. He also liked woodworking, working with a computer, coin collecting, and traveling. He was a two-time president of the Star Promenaders Square Dance Club, and did some square dance calling. Bill is survived by his wife, Lucille Weiler of Fort Madison, two daughters, Sharilyne (husband Bernie) Umthum of Cedar Falls and Rhonda (husband Rod) Staggs of Loveland, Colo., two sons, Monty (wife Julie) Weiler and Danne (wife Danylle) Weiler, both of Fort Madison, a sister, Lona Thomas of Fort Madison, two brothers, Raleigh Weiler of Dunedin, Fla. and Gary Weiler of Greenacres, Wash., a stepsister, Delores Windus of West Liberty, nine grandchildren, four great-granddaughters, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father and mother and one brother. The family met with friends on Friday, Nov. 4 at King-Lynk Funeral Home, just prior to the Memorial Service at 11:30 a.m. His body has been cremated. Burial will be in Soldiers Circle in Oakland Cemetery, Fort Madison. Military services will be performed at the cemetery by the Fort Madison Veterans Honor Guard.
