Deceased Was Long Known In Chesapeake Oyster Trade. Active In Politics. After an illness of more than eighteen months, during which time he took treatment in some of the largest hospitals in Baltimore City, William James Hurley, well-known resident of Crisfield, closed his eyes in death at his home on Asbury Avenue last Saturday morning. Cancer of the kidneys was the cause of death. Members of his family were at his bedside when the end came. Mr. Hurley was born near Messongo, Accomac County, Va., on August 9th, 1863, and was 60 years of age on his last birthday. Nearly 40 years ago, while in his early manhood, he moved to Crisfield where he has resided continuously since that time. Mr. Hurley spent his entire life in the Chesapeake oyster trade, and was one of the best known boatmen on the bay. During his long and active career, he commanded such well-known vessels as the schooner Charles A. Pryor, the Eva S. Cullison, the schooner Sweet, leaving his last command, the power steamer L. C. Quinn, when stricken by his last illness. Capt. Jim, as Mr. Hurley was invariably known up and down the tidewater and throughout Somerset County, was a man of rugged integrity, of strong convictions and unswerving loyalty to his friends, he enjoyed the friendship and confidence of a legion to whom his passing brought genuine regret. He was a man's man, first and last, and he was beloved by men. In politics Mr. Hurley was a life-long Democrat, and was active in party matters for many years. He was the Democratic nominee for sheriff of somerset county, in the campaign of 1917, and with a division in the Democratic Party made a remarkable fight against great odds. He also represented his party at various political gatherings and was always interested in the supremacy of the Democratic Party and its nominees. For several months Capt. Jim as well as his family and friends, had known that the end was only a question of time and that there was no hope of his recovery. through it all, however, he was cheerful and bright, at peace with his maker and ready to meet the end when it came. Announcement of his death, while not unexpected, was received with deep regret by the entire community. Mr. Hurley was married in 1885 to Miss Mary S. Lawson, daughter of the late John and Hettie Lawson of the Asbury section who still survives him. He and Mrs. Hurley were a very devoted couple, and he was a kind considerate father as well. Besides his widow, Mr. Hurley is survived by the following children: John W. Hurley of Crisfield, Robert L. Hurley of Carney's Point, N.J., William J. Hurley, Jr., of Crisfield, Mrs. Chas. O. Kieffner, Misses Mary and Jessie Hurley of Baltimore, Milton G. and Malcolm Hurley of Crisfield. One brother—Henry S. Hurley of Pocomoke City; and three sisters—Mrs. Washington Trader of Lecato, Va., Mrs. Hettie N. Gladding and Mrs. L. W. Sterling of Crisfield, also survive. Funeral services were held from the Baptist Temple on Tuesday afternoon, when a large gathering of Friends, despite the inclement weather, and an automobile truck load of beautiful floral designs, attested to the high regard in which the deceased was held. the services were conducted by Dr. Bob Killgore and Dr. W. F. Corkran, and the interment was in Asbury cemetery. Mr. Hurley was a member of Eastern Shore Council, Jr., O. U. A. M. and the Modern Woodmen, and representatives of those Orders were in attendance at the funeral. The active pall-bearers were I. George Tawes, Herbert L. Lawson, W. B. Justice, Wm. J. Adams, Jesse Ennis and John W. Matthews. The honorary pall-bearers were John B. Nelson, John W. Riggin, Joseph Pinto, Rex Riggin, Ellsworth T. Sterling, Myer A. Saltz and Lorie C.
