My family and I visited Aunt Hazel and Uncle Bill many times over the years. An unfortunate accident left Uncle Bill with a whistle as he spoke. The story he told my father was that he was badly wounded when he was riding a motorcycle behind an ambulance. When the ambulance was hit by the Germans and lost control, Uncle Bill crashed into it causing the handlebar of the motorcycle to pierce the roof of his mouth. My father also stated that as soon as Uncle Bill came back from the war, he went out and burned his uniform. Ever curious, my father also told me to never ask Uncle Bill anything about the war as he would not speak of it again. They were a lovely couple, old fashioned and charming.
