Pioneer Harness Man, Victim of Angina Pectoris the Night. When W. J. Peed, 69, passed away early this morning at his home in Seattle, Ellensburg lost the founder of one of its oldest businesses and one of the oldest pioneers in Kittitas County. Although Mr. Peed has had several attacks of angina pectoris, he had not had any serious illness for about a Year and a half and his death early this morning was a shock to both his family and friends. A wire was received from Seattle by his son, Clarence Peed of this city, at 1 am that his father was very ill. He left as soon as possible but it is not known whether he arrived while his father was still alive. W. J. Peed was born in Tippecanoe County, Indiana, in 1861, His father died when he was young. When he was 11 .years old, his mother moved to Illinois, and. two years later, in 1874 they went to Arkansas City Kans., where he learned the saddle, and harness maker trade, with a half brother Mitchell, who was then engaged in the business Buying out his brother he ran it alone until 1879 when he left for New Mexico and Colorado where he remained until 1882. He came to Ellensburg in 1883 on horseback over Snoqualmie pass and started in the harness business, with a partner. When the disastrous: fire of 1889 razed Ellensburg, Peed was .one of the very few who were not financially ruined and it was not long until he had rebuilt his business. He continued in the harness business until 1922 when he sold out to his son Clarence, who is at the present located at the corner of 5th and Pearl. Since 1922 Mr. Peed has spent most of his time in Seattle at his home there but his interest has always remained in Ellensburg and he has made frequent visits 'here with friends. Peed, during the 39 years he lived in Ellensburg was active in community affairs, being mayor of the city in 1909 and a member of the school board for a number of years. He is survived by his wife and three daughters. Mrs. Harold Anderson. Mrs. T. C. Johnson and Miss Helen Peed all of Seattle, one son, Clarence of Ellensburg, two grandchildren, Margaret Ann Peed of Ellensburg, and Patricia Marie Andersen of Seattle. Mr. Peed will be buried in Ellensburg. The funeral arrangements will be announced later.
