WALLACE OBITUARY Last week we mentioned the death of one of the earliest settlers of the Middle Loup Valley in the Northeast part of Custer county, William Jasper Wallace, who was born in Appanoose county, Iowa, December 31st, 1853, and died at his home near West Union, Nebraska January 18th, 1922, being at the time of his death 68 years and 17 days old. Jasper Wallace as he was known to people all over the northern part of Custer county, was the next to the youngest of the five children of Thomas and Eliza R. Berkeley Wallace, who resided on a farm in Appanoose county, Iowa, where Mr. Wallace grew up. He attended a nearby school. April 2nd, 1876 he was married to Miss Mary S. Sutton who was born in Marshall county, Indiana. Mr. and Mrs. Wallace lived on a farm there until October 1881, when they bid 'goodbye' to their friends farewell to the scenes of their younger days and joined the great throng of those who were breaking home ties in all parts of the central and southern states and going west to make homes in a new country. With their two children they arrived in northeast Custer county and took a homestead nine miles north and a mile west of what at that time was the new and flourishing little town of West Union, Nebraska. They also took a 'timber' or 'tree claim' adjoining the homestead. Like the great majority of the early settlers throughout a large part of Nebraska, their first home was a sod house which they occupied for many years. In 1898 this gave way to a fine modern residence, fitted with many conveniences which were perfectly unknown to the pioneers. Thus it was that Mr. Wallace passed forty years of his life more than five ninths of it, on the land that had never been touched by the plow before his occupation of it more than a generation ago. Coming to a new country, like this was the time, it was but natural that Mr. and Mrs. Wallace had to endure all the trials and hardships and discouragements of the men and women of that day. One of these hardships was caused by the lack of a railroad in the country, making it necessary to haul the farmer's produce to Grand Island more than one hundred miles distant and bring back lumber, groceries, clothing, hardware and other necessities. It was to the heroic efforts, toll and sacrifices of such pioneers as these that Nebraska owes so much for they made possible the developments that mean so much to those who have come later and fallen heir to the fruits of the labors of the pioneers. Five children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Wallace. Memory whose home has been at Grand Island, Nebraska for the past two or three years; Purl, of Taft, California; Della Mae, Now Mrs. Fred Poters of Beloit Wisconsin, Howard also of California; and Wesley of Arcadia, Nebraska. These together with the good wife and ten grandchildren are left to mourn his departure. One brother survives him, Lewis, who still resides on the old homestead in Appanoose county, Iowa. The funeral was held at the home at one o'clock Friday afternoon, January 20th, 1922, Rev. M.M. Long, pastor of the M.E.
