Seldom is a community plunged in such universal and sincere sorrow as it was when on last Friday morning word was passed around that John Kays had passed away the evening before. Although for the past week his death was momentarily expected, the announcement was a great shock and the whole community was plunged in profound sorrow. The direct cause of his death was General Sepsis, following treatment for cancer. At the time of his death Mr. Kays was 50 years, 10 months and 2 days old. About a year and a half ago Mr. Kays became aware of the fact that he had cancer and since that time has put up a grand but unsuccessful fight to effect a cure. Last summer, upon the advice of friends, he went to Cavalier and took treatment from Joe Desbro, who was recommended as having in a great many cases effected complete cure of the dread cancer. At first Mr. Kays seemed to be somewhat benefited from the treatment, but as time went on it became evident that the treatment was not accomplishing the desired results. This fall, upon the advice of Mr. Desbro who realized that his treatment was inadequate, Mr. Kays went to Indianapolis, Ind., and for the greater part of the winter was under the care of Root and McNeil, supposedly successful cancer specialists. Not being able to afford him any relief, they finally sent him to Prof. Henry, professor at Live Steam Sanitarium, in the same city. He had only been there for a short time when from the tenor of his letters home, his family and friends decided that all was not well, and decided to investigate. Accordingly on March 31st, Dr. W. H. Porter and Archie Sillers left for Indianapolis to ascertain what benefit, if any, Mr. Kays was deriving from the treatment he had been taking all winter. Upon arriving there they found Mr. Kays in a very bad way and apparently suffering greatly and growing steadily worse. They prevailed upon him to return home with them. Upon his arrival in Calvin everything possible was done for his comfort, but it was realized that the cancer, together with the treatment, had so undermined his constitution that he could not long survive. He was taken to the Maggie Sillers residence in the north end of town and Mrs. Kays came down from the farm to take care of him. A nurse from Grand Forks was in charge and on each evening two of his friends sat up with him. Right up until nearly the last he maintained his cheerful spirit and tried to lighten the burden and sorrow of his family and friends. John Kays was born at Hulbert, Ontario, on June 20, 1869 and spent his early boyhood there. In 1888 he came to Cavalier county and for a number of years was employed on farms in the vicinity of Hannah and Langdon. In 1895 he filed on a homestead in Cypress township, proving up and receiving his patent from the government five years later. The homestead was located five miles North of Calvin and is still the home of the Kays family. Eighteen years ago he was united in marriage to Miss Emma Webster. To this union were born seven children, five of whom are living - three sons and two girls. The death of Mr. Kays marks the passing of one of the communities most highly respected citizens. A kind and loving father, a faithful husband, and a staunch friend, could truly be said of this good man. He was possessed of an indomitable spirit and his friends could not resist his good humor. He was great lover of home and home life and, while a hard worker, could always find time to enjoy the family circle. He was a member of the Corinthian Masonic Lodge and was the third Master of the Order. He was also a member of the Eastern Star and the Yeoman Lodges. Besides his wife and children, he is survived by two sisters and a brother, living in Ontario. Mr. Kays was very well known throughout the county, and large delegations of Masons and others from Langdon, Munich, Clyde and Sarles, came over to attend the funeral and pay their last respects to the departed one. Funeral services were held from the Presbyterian church last Sunday afternoon at 2:30 and interment made in the Masonic cemetery north of town. The services were in charge of the local Masonic lodge. The Masons formed at the Temple and marched in a body to the church and, after the services, to the cemetery where they took charge of the burial ceremony. Many beautiful floral designs, gifts of Masonic and Eastern Star orders and sorrowing friends, were placed upon the coffin. The bereaved family have the heartfelt sympathy of the entire community in their great sorrow.
