Steele, 62, of Custer, who was in the cattle business in eastern Montana for 50 years, beginning as a small boy on his father's ranch near Billings, died at 4 pm on Saturday after having suffered a heart attack. Mr. Steel was stricken while working cattle on his ranch north-west of Custer. He succemed on the way to a hospital in Billings. Mr. Steele was born Sept. 7, 1881, near Toronto, Canada, son of John and Margaret Steele. When he was 10, his parents brought him to Yellowstone County. They settled on a ranch outside Billings on Cemetery Road in Hysham, MT. He attended Billings schools, riding horseback to and from town. When still a young boy, he set out on his own and worked for some of the large cattle companies in eastern Montana, including Kirby O'Donnell, Spidel and EE Snelling outfits. In 1909 he homesteaded 11 miles north of Custer, running cattle under the 7 Bar Z brand. After the hard winter of 1919 he sold out to the Bent Bar Company, remaining with concern until 1937 as its foreman. In the latter year he bought back his old holdings and subsequently adding more land to the original homestead. In 1945 he moved from the homestead to a new home six miles northwest of Custer. Mr. Steele was a master Mason member of Crescent lodge 117 at Melstone. Surviving are his wife, the former Mrs. Blanche Cassity, whom he married in 1945; two children by a previous marriage, Mrs. David Abel and William E. Steele of Custer; two grandchildren, David Abel, Jr.; and Jolene Steele of Custer; a brother Harry Steele of San Bernardino, CA, a sister; Mrs. Lloyd Van Houten, of Perris, CA. and an uncle and aunt in Toronto. The funeral will be at 2 pm Thursday at the Congregational church in Custer. Burial will be in Custer Cemetery, Custer, MT.
