Some weeks ago Mr. Blackwood made a trip to Rochester in hopes of getting some relief from his trouble, but it seems nothing could be done and he has been gradually losing ground since his return home. He was 63 years old and has been a resident of Nelson for many years. The family has the sympathy of many Nelson friends in their bereavement. Although definite arrangements for the funeral have not been made it is probable that services will be on Sunday afternoon. Mr. Blackwood leaves his wife and three children: Mrs. Chester Crossley of Superior; Jamie Blackwood of Greybull, Wyoming; and Mrs. Herbert Sheets of Alexandria. A sister, Mrs. Ann Gallagher of Eddyville, Iowa, has been here for the past two weeks. ================================================ The Nelson Gazette (Nelson, NE), Thursday, May 26, 1927; pg. 6 William J. Blackwood was born in Belfast, County Antrim, Ireland, August 13, 1864, and departed this life May 19, 1927, aged 62 years, 9 months and 6 days. Mr. Blackwood had been ill for about four months. After making a trip to Rochester, he returned to his home in Nelson, and after all that could be done by loving hands he passed to his reward. Mr. Blackwood came to America when only six weeks old and spent his boyhood days in Eddyville, Iowa. When he became of age he homesteaded in Sherman county (sic), Kansas. He was united in marriage with Dora E. Jay February 23, 1890. The first few years of married life were spent of (sic) a farm near Nelson and Goodland, Kansas. In 1899 he moved to Nelson, later to McCook, also moving to Eddyville, Iowa, for a time. About 1906 the family moved back to Nelson, where Mr. Blackwood remained until his death. He leaves his wife and three children: James J. of Greybull, Wyoming; Emma E. Crossley of Superior; and Bessie G. Sheets of Alexandria. Besides these, he leaves a sister, Mrs. Gallagher of Eddyville, Iowa, and nine grand children. The deceased spent ten years in the service of the Rock Island railroad and ten years serving the city of Nelson in the capacity of city engineer. He was well known for his mechanical skill with which ability he served through the years. In 1886 Mr. Blackwood united with the Christian church of Nelson, where his membership remained until death. He was also a member of the I.O.O.F. and the M.W.A. lodges of Nelson. He was a good citizen and will be greatly missed by those among whom he has lived in this community so many years. He spent a quiet life though always active in his line of work. The friends of Mr. Blackwood share with his faithful wife and the children the deep sorrow of his departure. After the funeral service held at the Christian church, the body was laid to rest in the Nelson cemetery (sic).
