Description	:	William Karl “Bill” Shafer, 84 of Napoleon, died Saturday night, June 29, 2013 surrounded by his family at Defiance Inpatient Hospice Center. He was born May 9, 1929 in Napoleon to the late William M. and Adena (Hastedt) Shafer. On October 30, 1954 he married Bonnie Hill in Angola, Indiana and and they shared over 58 years together. Read More	William Karl “Bill” Shafer, 84 of Napoleon, died Saturday night, June 29, 2013 surrounded by his family at Defiance Inpatient Hospice Center. He was born May 9, 1929 in Napoleon to the late William M. and Adena (Hastedt) Shafer. On October 30, 1954 he married Bonnie Hill in Angola, Indiana and and they shared over 58 years together. Bill was a 1947 graduate of Napoleon High School and then enlisted with the U.S. Army National Guard. He served active duty with the U.S. Army 522nd Military Police Company during the Korean Conflict. He then continued to serve his country in the National Guard and retired in 1970 as a First Sergeant. He always remained a proud veteran and continued to help his fellow man as a driver for the Henry County Veterans Services. From 1956-1981 Bill was a Napoleon City Police Officer and Lieutenant. He was known as a strong and fair officer to his community. After his retirement, he kept busy as a truck driver with Wayne Glore Trucking, Company, Defiance. He was a member of Christ United Methodist Church and a life member of Arthur Dan Petersen AMVETS Post #1313; Bert G. Taylor American Legion Post #300; Elks Lodge #929, and guest member of Luther R. Kolbe VFW Post #8218, all of Napoleon. He was also a former member of Napoleon Civil Service Commission and former Board Member of the Society of the Handicapped. He lived his entire life in Napoleon and was well known and enjoyed in the community. He could be found at the local veteran associations; enjoying a good card game; playing golf or playing the nearest slot machine. He was adored by his family. He is survived by wife, Bonnie; children, Patti (Robert) Martinez; William “Buster” Shafer; Jayne Throne; 9 grandchildren; Tiffani (Jeremy) Shirey; Mandie (Art)Wells; Raechel (Mark) Feehan; Heather (Scott) Marr; Nick Leow; Kyle (Trisha) Shafer; Tyler Shafer; Aleesha Shafer; Shelby Shafer; 8 great-grandchildren; Clayton; Mariah; Faith; Lillie; Landon; Kennedy; Whitney; Brynn; brother, Leo “Butch” Shafer and special friends, Jim and Linda Arthur. He was preceded in death by five sisters, Lillian Meyer; Dorothy Shartzer; Mildred Nagel; Norma Shadle; Zelma Shafer and two brothers, Maurice and Harold “Pep” Shafer. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday at Rodenberger Funeral Home, Napoleon with Pastor Russell Shaeffer officiating. Graveside military honors accorded by Napoleon Joint Veteran Posts will follow in Forest Hill Cemetery, Napoleon. Visitation will be 2-8 p.m. on Tuesday at Rodenberger Funeral Home, Napoleon. The family suggests memorials to Christ United Methodist Church or Honor Flight of Northwest Ohio.
