Description	:	William Kendall Colburn, son of William and Harriet (Cain) Colburn, was born at Greiggsville, New York on January 14, 1855 and passed away at the Memorial Home in Harlan on January 3, 1953 at the age of 97 years, 11 months and 19 days. Read More	William Kendall Colburn, son of William and Harriet (Cain) Colburn, was born at Greiggsville, New York on January 14, 1855 and passed away at the Memorial Home in Harlan on January 3, 1953 at the age of 97 years, 11 months and 19 days. There were two brothers, George W. and Henry; and one sister, Hattie Maysent. When he was 14 years of age, the family moved to Michigan where he later received his advanced education. At the age of 20 the family moved to a farm three miles north of Panama. He was united in marriage to Hattie Bowerman of Michigan, April 2, 1877. They both taught school during the first year of their married life, then moved to a farm two miles east of Harlan, where he farmed and also taught school during the winter months. Later they moved to Harlan, where he taught in the city schools and was elected County Superintendent of schools. He was superintendent of the Defiance schools for five years then entered the mercantile business with his bother-in-law, George Maysent of Earling. Later he purchased a farm five miles east of Harlan, teaching during the winter months. All in all he taught thirty-five years. In 1900 he was elected secretary of the Shelby County Mutual Insurance Co. In 1901 they moved to Harlan where he continued his business for forty-five years, retiring at the age of ninety. He was also a director of the Iowa Mutual Tornado Insurance Company of Des Moines for many years. Afterwards he served as a director of the Iowa Mutual Reinsurance Association of Grinnell, Iowa for a number of years. For 75 years, as long as health permitted, he was an active member of the Harlan Methodist church, with the exception of the five years he lived in Defiance, and the six years at Bowman's Grove. He was always interested in civic affairs and served on the town council and as a member of the Harlan school board. His faithful wife passed away on June 16, 1931. There were six children, Jennie, Clara, Ella, Charley, Herbert and Jay, of whom only Clara (Mrs Stanley Morgan) and Jay survive. There are six grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren, and nine great-great-grandchildren. Final rites were held January 6, at the Pauley funeral home with Rev. A Wiuff and Rev. Lawrence Beals officiating. Burial was in the Harlan cemetery. Pallbearers were Roy and Vic Morgan, Wendell and Wayne Tague, Jay Colburn Jr. and Martin McKenzie.
