Here he was brought up, attended school, and later worked as a farm hand. He was married to Bertha Rietz on Dec. 13, 1878, at Darmitz. Fourteen years later, or in 1892, Mr. Kies and his family emigrated to the United States, coming to Breda, Carroll county, Iowa, where they had relatives living. The first five years in the country of their adoption were spent here, Mr. Kies following the trade of carpenter. Later they moved to a farm near Breda. In 1902, the family moved to Milwaukee, Wis. Their stay there, however, was only of two years' duration. On their return to Iowa, they lived for a time on a farm near Lake View. They then moved to a farm near Carnarvon which Mr. Kies purchased a short time afterwards, and where they resided for ten years. In 1919, upon retiring from active farm work, Mr. and Mrs. Kies moved to Lake View, which was their home during the remainder of their years. Mrs. Kies passed away six years ago. Almost ever since her death, Mr. Kies' health had been impaired, but not to such a degree as prevented him from doing his daily work or visiting with his children. During the last few months, and particularly the last few weeks, a marked change for the worse was evident. His death at the age of 77 years, 3 months and 15 days came peacefully after a period of anxiety and pain. The deceased gentleman held membership in the Immanuel Presbyterian church of Carnarvon, and had an active part in the construction of the present building. From 1914 to 1919, he held the office of ruling elder of the congregation. Of the twelve children born to Mr. and Mrs. Kies, nine survive their parents. They are: Mrs. John Roelfs, Lake View, Iowa; Mrs. Harry Sinning, Ackley, Iowa; Mrs. Hugo Stoelk, Westside, Iowa; Ernest Kies, Odebolt, Iowa; Frebert Kies, Breda, Iowa; William Kies, Odebolt, Iowa; Herbert and Albert Kies of Ackley, Iowa; and Reinhold Kies, of Carnarvon, Iowa. One child died in infancy in Germany. Two married daughters have also passed on: they are Mrs. Herman Greve and Mrs. Casjen Flink. Mr. Kies' brother, Albert Kies, passed away on March 2, 1936 at Kolberg, Germany. Twenty-eight grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren also survive this kindly gentleman.
