Mr. Cowgill, active member of Teton's Oldest Settlers for many years and one time state senator from Teton county, was a native of the state of Missouri. He came to Montana in the lat 80's and made a success of ranch operations. His ranch on Birch creek, about six miles north of Dupuyer, is now owned by T.O. Larson. He also owned ranch property near the present town of Bynum. In 1915, when the railroads entered Choteau, he platted and promoted the Cowgill addition, which though an integral part of Choteau has never been officially entered within the city limits. Mr. Cowgill is survived by his wife and one son, Lester, of Portland, Ore., who was with his father during his last illness. Mrs. Cowgill is the former Belle Guyan, sister of the wife of the late Gene Leach, also a prominent early day family. Two sons, Geyer and Glen passed away a good many years ago and both are buried in Choteau cemetery. In personal appearance, he resembled the conventional Kentucky colonel, and he not only looked the part, but bore it out in demeanor. An ardent chess player and one who especially enjoyed a game of solo with his old time friends, generous and warm of heart, kindly in mannerisms, "Billy" Cowgill leaves behind him a wealth of good deeds and a treasured memory in the hearts of all who knew him. ---- The Choteau Acantha (MT), 29 Nov 1945 Tribute Paid to Old-Time Citizen Funeral services for William Cowgill, 83, Teton county pioneer, were held last Saturday afternoon from the Methodist church. A large concourse of friends from late and early days attended. Among those from out of town were Mr. and Mrs. W.J. Dorington of Conrad and Mr. and Mrs. Arbie Leach of Valier. Mrs. Cowgill accompanied the body from the Cowgill home at Hot Springs, and their son, Lester Cowgill, and wife, the former Gladys Whittaker of Choteau, were present. Services at the family plot in the Choteau cemetery were in charge of Choteau lodge No. 44, A.F. and A.M., of which the deceased had long been a member. J.G. Jackson, past worshipful master of the lodge, officiated in the last rites of the order, assisted by members. The pallbearers were T.O. Larseon, C.H. Porter, Clarence Looney, Obert Peterson, C.D. McDonald and A.B. Guthrie. During his long and active lifetime, Mr. Cowgill served the people of Teton county faithfully in various capacities. He was a member of the board of county commissioners, State senator, and a member of the first board of trustees of Teton County high school.
