Was Pioneer Business Man of This City. A gloom of sorrow was cast over the entire community that William L. Turner had been taken by death at his home on Decoration Day at 7:00 in the evening. He had passed a very good day and only returned last week from the hospital where he had been for treatment and was very much improved upon returning home. His death came as a great blow to the community, in which he lived the greater part of his life. His passing was due to weakening of the heart muscles, following an illness of several weeks duration. William L. Turner was born on January 6, 1851 at Uniontown, Pa. and died at Creighton, Nebr. on May 30, 1929 at the age of 78 years, 4 months and 24 days. At the age of 9 he came to Iowa with his parents. On June 24, 1875 he was united in marriage to Marjorie W. Skiles. Two children were born to this union, Wid L. Turner and Edith Turner, now Mrs. C.B. Goodell. In 1869 they came to Nebraska and lived at Pleasant Hill in Saline county until February 4, 1883, when they came to Creighton and where he has since made his home. Mrs. Turner died on December 31, 1898. He was again married on August 24, 1909 to Mrs. Elizabeth Watkins at Creighton, Nebr. The deceased was in business in Creighton for forty-six years. He was a registered druggist and an optician and a master watchmaker. He was first engaged in the drug business and about fifteen years later combined jewelry and optical work. His son, Wid L. became associated with him in the business in the year 1903 and they have enjoyed a very good business. Mr. Turner served as mayor of Creighton for several years and also served as a member of the school board. In 1887 he served in the state legislature as representative from this district for one term. Mr. Turner leaves to mourn, besides his wife, one son, Wid L. of Creighton and one daughter, Mrs. C.B. Goodell of Lincoln, Kansas. At one time Mr. Turner was an active member of the Masonic and Eastern Star lodges, but in later years discontinued his membership. Forty-six years of business life in Creighton may well be understood as a lifetime activity and "Dad" Turner, as he was so familiarly called, endured amongst his business associates with satisfaction to his enterprise and commanded that commendable respect that comes only from persistent and consistent fair dealing with fellowmen. A lifetime in business included the pioneer days, a flashback to which will reveal the rough shod customer who meandered much, yet meant well. Through every condition of adversity and prosperity "Dad" Turner served and served well. The time for Death to beckon and "Dad" Turner passed on, but the earnest and conscientiousness of a lifetime survives and memory cherishes the good he has done. When the greatest of all good is said what can be greater than honorable throughout a lifetime, which was his epitome. Funeral services were held from the home on Monday afternoon at 1:00, conducted by Rev. Gramley, pastor of the Episcopal church and burial was in Greenwood cemetery. Many friends were present to pay the final tribute. The floral offerings were many and beautiful, which attested to the esteem in which this Creighton citizen was held in this community. As a token of respect business houses of Creighton were closed during the hour of the funeral. The News unites with friends in extending condolences to those who mourn.
