Oates, pioneer merchant of Russellville, Ark. and one of the best known citizens of this section of the state, died at his home in Russellville, Ark. on Thursday, December 20, 1923. Mr. Oates was born in York county, S.C., January 14, 1848, but removed with his parents to Arkansas when a mere child, and spent the remainder of his life in Pope county of his adopted state. Though a boy in his teens at the time of the Civil War, he enlisted in the Confederate Army, and served during the closing days of the war in Stirman's Battery, Dockery's Brigade. At the close of the war he returned home and engaged in farming, later entering Russellville as a salesman in one of the local stores. After a few years he became the manager of the E.V. Cook Mercantile Company with which he was connected for more than thirty years, working up to the position of president and chief stockholder before retiring form business some twelve months ago. Mr. Oates was known far and wide as a churchman and active Christian. he was born of Presbyterian stock being direct descendant of some of the original signers of the Mecklenberg Articles. As a young man he united with the Associate Reformed Presbyterian church of Pottsville, later he had a part in organizing the Washburn Memorial Presbyterian church (U.S.) of Russellville; and when the latter united with the Central Presbyterian church (U.S.A.) of Russellville, he became a member of that body. He was an unusually active churchman all his life, acting as ruling elder for almost fifty years, during which time he was also constantly a Sunday School teacher and Sunday School Superintendent. He was always very regular in attendance in all Sunday and services of the church. He was a close student of the Bible, and made it the rule of his life to conduct daily family worship in his own home. He read the church periodicals regularly and kept abreast of all the affairs of his and other sister denominations. he was a hearty supporter of his pastor in all advanced programs of church work. It was his custom to entertain all visiting ministers in his home, and referred with pride to "the prophet's chamber," which was constantly maintained in his residence. Being so intensely interested in church work he was fortunate in marrying as a life companion, Miss Mary Hughey, who always shared with him his zeal and love for the church and its work. Mr. and Mrs. Oates were both delighted when their only daughter chose as her husband, a minister of the Presbyterian Church, Rev. J. Leighton Green, now the pastor of the Westminster Presbyterian church of San Antonio, Texas. Mr. and Mrs. Oates had one son, J. Oscar Oates, who passed away during the Christmas season of 1916. Mr. Oates is survived by his faithful wife; one daughter, Mrs. J.L. Green; five grandchildren, Virginia Oates of Russellville; J. Leighton, Jr., Mary Louise, William and Evely Green of San Antonio; one sister, Mrs. W.H. Rankin of Russellville; two brothers, J.R. Oates of Russellville, and Dr. Thomas Oates of Mexia, Texas. Funeral services were conducted for Mr. Oates from the Central Presbyterian church of Russellville, which he served so long and so well as ruling elder, by the pastor, Rev. W.R. Hodgson, and his former pastor, Rev. Wiley Lin Hurie, President of the College of the Ozarks, Clarksville, Ark. (The Courier, February 14, 1924).
