Read More	Greenville News, Page 1 Sunday, June 17, 1928 TWO YOUNG BROTHERS BADLY HURT WHEN CARS COLLIDE AT UNDERPASS Oscar Moon, 16, and William Moon, 14, orphaned grandsons of Jack Center, of the American Spinning Company, were seriously injured, the latter possibly fatally, shortly after 11 o'clock last night when a light automobile in which they were riding and another automobile collided on Buncombe Street at the Southern Railroad underpass at Poe Mill. The two boys were rushed to the city hospital for treatment, both being in "serious" condition, it was reported by attaches of the institution. The younger, William Moon, lost a leg and both were bruised and cut. A man who gave his name as James Ward, of Poe Mill, was detained by Deputies from the office of Sheriff Carlos A. Rector, it being alleged that he was driving the machine that crashed into the one occupied by the Moon boys. Ward was not badly hurt, neither was J.C. Batson, a 14 year old boy of Park Place, who was driving the automobile in which the Moon youths were riding. Young Batson and the Moon boys were driving out Buncombe Street from Greenville where they had attended a moving picture show. Almost directly under the underpass the collision occured, Ward's automobile being driven toward Greenville. Conflicting reports were told deputies as to the speed of the cars and which was on the proper side of the street. Both machines were literally wrecked in the collision, and occupants were thrown from the cars. It was regarded by officers as lucky that all occupants were not badly hurt. Several ambulances were called to the scene, but the Moon brothers were carried to the hospital in a private automobile before ambulances could arrive. Definite nature of injuries of the two in the hospital could not be ascertained late last night as both were still in emergency wards and examinations had not been completed. The automobile Ward was driving was said to have been rented from a local livery company. It was a new model Ford touring car. The other machine was owned by C.R. Thompson, store keeper of Poe Mill, for whom the Young Batson worked. ________________________________ Greenville News, Page 2 Monday, June 18, 1928 WILLIAM MOON, ONE OF FIVE HURT IN AUTO ACCIDENT NEAR CITY, IS DEAD MAKE INQUIRY TODAY INTO SERIOUS COLLISION AT POE MILL UNDERPASS ANOTHER BADLY HURT William Moon, 14, of the American Spinning Company, one of the two orphaned brothers injured late Saturday night in an auto collision on Buncombe Street at the Southern Railroad underpass at Poe Mill, died yesterday morning at the city hospital where he was rushed for treatment. James Ward, of Poe Mill, said to have been driving the automobile that collided with the one in which Young Moon was riding, was being held in the county jail last night pending outcome of an inquest into the death, which Coroner Parks announced would be held this morning at 10:30 o'clock at the James McAfee undertaking company. FOUR OTHERS HURT Four other persons were injured in the accident, although Oscar Moon, 16 year old brother of the deceased, was the only other one to be badly hurt. He too was carried to the city hospital and reports last night that his condition described as serious, had not changed for the better. Ward was slightly bruised and cut, as was J.C. Batson, 14 year old Park Place boy who was driving the car on which the Moon lads were riding. Mrs. Ted Robinson, who was riding in the car being driven by Batson,received a severe cut on one cheek. Her husband was ony slightly shaken in the collision. The automobile which Batson was driving was a light roadster. He and Mr. and Mrs. Robinson were riding in the car and the two Moon boys were standing on the running boards as the machine traveled out Buncombe Street from town, where the occupants had attended a moving picture show. Ward's machine, hired from the W.L. Simpson livery company, was being driven toward town. He was the sole occupant of the car. The two automobiles met almost midway under the underpass, the driveway of which is wide enough for two cars to pass safely. The Coroner's jury today will receive conflicting reports as to speed of the automobiles and which car was on the correct side of the road, according to witnesses who vary in their opinion. NINTH AUTO DEATH Both machines were wrecked in the accident. Funeral services for Young Moon will be conducted at 3:30 o'clock this afternoon at the home, 7 12 Mill Street, near the American Spinning Company. Rev. J.M. Trogdon will officiate and burial will be in the American Spinning Company cemetery. Young Moon is survived by his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Center, with whom he lived. His parents are dead. He is survived also by three sisters, Mrs. William Carter of Florida; Mrs. Grover Taylor and Miss Helen Moon, both of Greenville, and four brothers, Clinton, Joe, Oscar and Gentry Moon, all of Greenville.
