Read More	Thurs., Dec. 13, 1888 The Weekly Herald William Myers, who resided a short distance east of Spring Hill, committed suicide by cutting his throat, on Thursday of last week, Dec. 6. He had not been well for some time and had made several attempts at taking his life; the family were watching him closely. Succeeding in getting out of their sight on some reasonable excuse, after a time they became uneasy and one of his boys went to look for him. He was some distance from the house; seeing the boy approaching, he took his large pocket knife, which was sharp, and severed his throat from ear to ear, and died in a few minutes. We do not desire to be considered as criticizing the friends of unfortunate persons who are disposed to insanity, but this case is a warning that all should heed. There are ample provisions made for insane persons by the state. At these institutions, skilled physicians are employed, every comfort is provided, and the patient is better cared for there, than they can possibly be at home. The state has expended almost millions of money to provide places for these unfortunates, and their friends should never hesitate one hour after they are convinced that insanity is the disease, in sending them to these institutions. It becomes a duty that friends owe to the patient. There is a foolish dread about sending persons to the asylum which should not exist. A thoughtful state has provided them and everything is arranged for the comfort and cure of those who are diseased in mind. Some think that the inmates are ill-treated in these institutions, which is farthest from the truth. In this case of Mr. Myers, his life might have been saved for years, and probably he would have been permanently cured had the matter been attended to and he sent to the asylum in time. # # # Thur., Dec. 13, 1888 Advocate Tribune Suicide –William Miers [Myers], who lived near Spring Hill, suicided last Thursday, by cutting his throat. Mr. Miers [Myers] was in moderately good circumstances, but failure of crops and poor health had so wrought upon him that his mind had partially yielded to the pressure, and he had been quite despondent; so much so indeed, that his family had feared he would do violence to himself and had been watching his movements for some time. On the day named Mrs. Miers [Myers] had gone to Des Moines and he was going about as usual, appearing in rather a better frame of mind than common. Presently he started out as he said to look after the cattle on a distant part of the farm. One of his sons soon followed and presently came up with him. He was on his knees, his throat cut almost from ear to ear, severing both jugular veins and the large artery. The blood was gushing out at a fearful rate. His right hand still grasped the fatal knife. Death was almost instantaneous.
