N. Wilson, proprietor of the Wilson Company and The Big Store, and one of the most prominent merchants in this section of the state, died at 10:20 o'clock last night, at McKinstry's Santarium, from appendicitis, after an illness of little over thirty-six hours. His death followed, an operation Sunday by which it was hoped to save his life. It is explained that while the operation was successful, the disease had advanced so far that his chances of recovery were slight from the first. Another wave of gloom, throughout this city, will follow the announcement that one of its honored and best known citizens passed away last night. W. N. Wilson has for almost half a century been a resident of Gainesville and became one of her most successful business men. He was a native of Alachua County. Born at Old Newnansville about 56 years ago, his early boyhood was spent there, his father Lemuel Wilson being at that time register of the United States Land Office, which was then located at Newnansville. At about the age of eleven years, W. N. Wilson moved to Gainesville, and later embarked in business for himself, after having spent his young manhood in the stationery and cold drink business. For the past 35 years, W. N. Wilson has been actively engaged in building the Wilson Company, which became one of the largest institutions of its kind in this section of the state. In the last few years he added to his labors The Big Store, to which he gave his own individual attention. He had many outside interests and found time to become one of the most successful orange growers in the state of Florida, being the owner, of a large acreage in Lake County. One of his closest friends, who has been associated with him from boyhood, stated last night that Mr. Wilson's life has been marked by success in every business venture that he had undertaken. He had many close personal friendships which deepened with the years, and his natural sympathy and large-hearted interest in the welfare of those less fortunate than himself drew around him many who depended upon him for advice and counsel. No man in his generation has contributed more freely of his time and means to the upbuilding of this city than the deceased. To suggest a public improvement was to immediately enlist the interest and support of W. N. Wilson, and his sound business judgment would be thrown into the balance in favor of the wisest and most businesslike furtherance of the project. In the days of the fight for the location of the state university, it was largely through his aggressiveness and far-sighted planning that the location was finally won by this city. Being in early life a splendid athlete he carried into his later years an active interest in athletic sports and did much for their promotion in the school and college. The deceased is survived by his wife and daughter, to whom the sympathy of the entire community will be extended in their hour of sorrow. Funeral services will be held this afternoon in the Baptist church at 5 o'clock, in charge of Robert McClellan. Rev. N. B. O'Kelley in conducting the services will be assisted by Rev. John G. Anderson. The Honorary pall-bearers will be Phillip Miller, W. W. Hampton, Jr., M. M. Parrish, Addison Pound, Dr. J. M. Dell, J. D. Stringfellow, E. G. Baxter, Dr. G. B. Tison, Frank Allen, W. T. Chesnut and W. R. Thomas. The active pallbearers will be J. C. McCraw, J. B. Bowers, R. F. Brush, B. F. Hampton, T. B. Means, and Morgan Fennell. Interment will be held at Evergreen Cemetery.
