(Nels) Rye died sometime after 10 a.m. Tuesday on the Big Timber - Gibson road and on the hill coming down to the Patterson bridge over the Sweet Grass. He had started to town alone from his ranch home, to attend a Masonic banquet held in this city that evening. Apparently he was stricken and lost control of his car, as it crossed a ditch and went through a fence, beside the road. A young son of Torger Birkeland passing inquired if Mr. Nye needed help and was told he would be all right in a little while. Later Mrs. Birkeland went to the car and found the man dead. While she was gone for assistance, Jerome Erickson, on his way to Big Timber with a load of wood, stopped to investigate. He then came to the G.O. Schulz home and phoned to town for help. Deceased was 61 years of age, a native Pawnee City, Neb. Twenty-six years ago he came to Montana ranching first near Fromberg, Carbon county. Three years later to moved to Melville and later started as a dry lander near Gibson, where he had since made his home. In 1912 he was elected to the lower house of the legislature as a republican, serving one term. He leaves a widow and four children, Madden, the oldest residing at Cooke City, Mont.; Robert at Los Angeles, Calif., and Reginald and Mary Elizabeth at home. All will be present at the funeral. For years he had been a prominent and popular resident of the county, a member of the Masonic lodge of this city and was en route to Big Timber to attend a Shrine banquet when death came. Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. at Masonic temple, the Masons having charge. Interment will be in Mountain View cemetery. Contributor: Julia Kinsey (48922386) •
