William Hart (5722090) Suggested edit: William Newton Hart b 27 May 1835 is very much alive and living with son John Henry in 1900 Newton, Buchanan Co, IA. His sister Mary Cartwright is also living there 1900. This headstone looks as if it has been replaced from an original as it's in very clean and unaged condition. I feel that whoever replaced his stone got the death dates wrong or this is not his headstone. He died 27 Oct 1904. Is it possible for you to contact the cemetery and ask if the stone has been replaced? This is very misleading to anyone researching his line. His memorial was created by the late Daphane Hoover. When she died her daughter transferred management of Hart's memorial to me. His stone is not the original. I see that Hoover left a note on the bottom of Hart's memorial that reads that there was no writing on the stone so she had one made. This stone was made by an individual whom I know from Independence, Iowa around 2000 at Hoover's request. The stone is made from white cement. I have used this same process and individual to fix pioneer cemetery stones in the same area, but not in this particular cemetery. So, the stone is not original. And from Daphane's note on Hart's memorial I know that no dates were on the original stone. The original stone would have been busted up and or unreadable to the extent that Hoover replaced it with the one that he currently has. Hoover and her husband did a lot of work in this particular area in pioneer cemeteries getting broken stones replaced and Mr. Hart's was one of them. I added your info to Hart's bio so that future researchers understand your side of the story. If your date of death is right then Hoover simply made a mistake on the DOD since none existed on the original stone. Brett Reece This is the obituary of W. N. Hart as appeared in the Walker News on Friday, November 4, 1904: "DEATH OF W. N. HART. _____________________ Former Resident of This Vicinity Dies in Nebraska--Funeral Held Saturday at Troy Mills ________ William N. Hart, who for many years resided near Troy Mills and Walker, died October 27 at the home of his daughter in Knox county, Nebraska, aged 65 years and 5 months. The remains were brought to Iowa for interment arriving here Saturday morning. Funeral services were held in the Christian church at Troy Mills Saturday at 11 a. m., and interment was made in the Lower Spring Grove cemetery. Rev. L. M. Starr conducted the services and the six sons served as bearers. Mr. Hart came to Iowa in 1857 and settled near Troy Mills. There two years later he married Miss Lydia Carson who died seven years ago. To this union were born thirteen children, eleven sons and two daughters, of whom nine are living and with but one exception were present at the funeral. Following his wife's death, Mr. Hart went to Nebraska to make his home with his daughters. His last request was that he should be brought to Iowa and buried by the side of his wife and that his children should accompany his remains to their last resting place. One son in Colorado was prevented by sickness from attending the funeral but four sons and one daughter from Nebraska were present."
