Covert, 60, of north of Ottumwa near Rutledge station, died of a heart attack at 8:45 a.m. today. He was in an ambulance being rushed from John Deere Ottumwa Works to a hospital when death occurred. He had worked as a production blacksmith for the Ottumwa factory for 35 years. He was born Nov. 3. 1897, in Mahaska county, the son of Abalom and Margaret Catherine Hoyle Covert. He had lived in Ottumwa 35 years. He was a member of the Davis Street Christian church, I.O.O.F. Lodge No. 9, and and Encampment 22, and United Auto Workers local No. 74. He and Gladys Garrett were married September 28, 1918, in Davis county. She survives. Other survivors are a daughter Mrs. Hazel McFarling of Ottumwa, and two sons, Earl L. Covert and William W. (Wally) Covert, both of Ottumwa. There are and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, six brothers, five sisters, and one grandson. He was the last of his family. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Johnson funeral chapel. The Rev. La Verne Morris of the Davis Street Christian church will be in charge. Burial will be in Shaul cemetery.
