If at the dawn of early morning we knew what the day would bring to us we would, no doubt, greet it differently. If at the beginning of the year we knew whether success should crown our efforts or failure attend our ways, many things would be different. If we should know from the beginning of life what it should bring to us the number of our days and the time of our passing, we, no doubt would meet many a situation in a way very different from that which it is our custom to do. It is not so. It cannot be so. It was not intended to be so. Many a life is snatched away in the bloom of youth, the flower of life or when life has begun to fade. God's messengers of death are abroad in the world choosing as their victims whomsoever they will. On Saturday morning, December 11, 1915, at 8 a.m., they came to the home of our Brother and Sister Brogdon and took away in the flower of life the "Flower of the Family" Otto, their son, aged 23 years, 3 months and 19 days. Otto was born and reared in Springdale and community. He was well known and was a favorite of all who knew him. Many times have I heard reference made to him as the Flower of the Family. He was converted at the age of 11 years during a meeting held at the Baptist Church in Springdale by J. J. Poter. He was converted at home and joined the church and was a faithful member. At the age of 20 he was ordained to the office of Deaconship and never betrayed the confidence thus reposed in him. In 1912 he was a member of the Senior Class of the Springdale High School and with 22 others graduated that year. When his heath began to break down he was engaged in the produce business in Springdale. This was a little more than two years ago. It seems that for a time the physicians were unable to determine the cause of the noticeable decline in health, but after several months they were forced to the unwelcome, but inevitable conclusion that Otto was infected with tuberculosis. Preparations were made for a hard fight to rid him of the terrible disease, and a hard fight was made against its ravages. He spent some time in the sanitarium at Booneville, and while there he determined to seek relief in the high altitude of the west. Returning home he began preparation to go to New Mexico. His father and sister, Miss Grace, accompanied him on the trip. Five months of strenuous effort and anxious waiting at Demming told the story. The atmosphere of that high altitude was not sufficient to enable them to win the fight. Otto had lost strength almost from the time they landed there and his case pronounced hopeless. He was brought back to his home to spend the time remaining to him among loved ones and friends. As the weeks passed those who observed noticed the gradual but certain wasting away of life and strength. Last Friday night was a crisis and he gave up the fight and began praying to the Lord to take him that night. On Saturday morning at 8 o'clock, he peacefully breathed his last. Father and mother, a large family of brothers and sisters and a host of friends mourn his loss from us, but know that he is at peace. Otto was the most patient sufferer I ever saw. Many times have I seen in his face clear evidence of raging fevers and deep suffering, but no murmur did I hear escape his lips. Funeral services were held at the Baptist Church Sunday afternoon in the presence of a congregation which over flowed the large auditorium of the Church. Pastor W. I. Elledge preached from the text "Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in Me" John 14:1. The choir rendered some very appropriate music in a splendid way. W. I.
