Horsey Would Have Been 95 Years Old In March Mr. William P. Horsey, the city's oldest resident, and one of the most prominent business men of the community, died at his home on Main street Wednesday. Feb. 25th, shortly after noon, at the age of 94 years. He would have been 95 next month. On Monday night, Feb. 9th, Mr. Horsey suffered a paralytic stroke from which he failed to rally, due in part to his advanced age. Mr. Horsey was a member of Somerset's first families. His father was the late Albert T. Horsey and his mother was Leah Nelson Horsey. He was born in Crisfield, before the city bore that name, March 12th, 1853. He was engaged in the retail mercantile business for most of his life, associated with his brother, the late Alonzo R. Horsey for the greater part of the time. Before the city was named Crisfield, Horsey Brothers were in business at the location across the alley from the store of J. A. Hearn & Co., which now is the J. P. Tawes & Bro. building. Later, the Horsey's occupied buildings further up the street for some years, and then some thirty or more years ago they built a large brick building on the corner of Main and 9th street, now the Briddell office building, and opened a large department store, with Mr. A. R. Horsey managing the men's apparel, shoes, etc., sections, and Mr. Wm. P. Horsey managing the ladies apparel and dry goods departments. When the Marine Bank of Crisfield was organized and began business in August of 1904, Mr. Horsey was its first cashier, a position he held for several years, and resigned to again take up the management of his store business. Mr. Horsey was a delightful man to know. He was soft spoken, humorous, witty, and friendly. His interest in the people and in the community was marked. He loved company, and was always happy when with a group of people talking about church or civic or other affairs or playing games of dominoes or bridge with kindred souls. Fairly tall and erect, he dressed neatly for all occasions, and had the courtly manner of a gentleman of the South. There were not many days but that he was at his place of business until after his retirement some years before and then he was to be seen on the streets almost daily, stopping to chat with friends, inquiring about the health of others, interested in everyday affairs. The years lay lightly upon him. and he was active up to the time of his last illness. He had had a long and active career as a churchman. He was the oldest member of Mt. Pleasant Methodist church, both in years and membership and also the oldest member of the Board of Stewards there, and in all the years of his church affiliation he seldom missed attending at least one service on Sunday. Mr. Horsey's life was successful both in material things and in those other things which are the essence of usefulness to family, friends and community. He was loved and esteemed in great measure and the many days of his long life were for the most part, pleasant days. He was twice married, his first wife having been Miss Clara Roach, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Roach. She died more than 60 years ago leaving an infant daughter Lillian, who became the wife of Dr. R. R. Norris. His second wife was Miss Edith Crow, of Wilmington, Del., who died some years ago, leaving a daughter, Madelaine, who is now Mrs. Frank P. Landon. He had been making his home with his daughter and her husband for some years. Funeral services will be held at the home on Main street on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock conducted by Rev. Elmer E. Bennett, pastor of Mt. Pleasant Methodist church the church Mr. Horsey attended so long and which he helped to plan and build. Bearers will be Warren F. Sterling, J. Coyne Sterling, Harold Bassett, J. Edwin Tawes, Charles W. Howeth, Norman Nelson, A. Wellington Tawes, and John T. Handy, Sr., and interment will be in the Crisfield cemetery. He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Frank P. Landon, and two grandchildren, Miss Natalie Landon of Crisfield. and Mrs. Julianna Norris Conroy, of Baltimore.
