Description	:	Death of Wm. Payton. Mr. Wm. Payton, formerly of this city, father of W.F. and J.W. Payton, died at his home in Guthrie Center, Thursday, the 8th. Mr. Payton was born in Union County,Ind., January 18, 1821. Married Catherine Norris August 22, 1840, in Delaware County, Ind. In 1852 he removed to Iowa, and in 1854 settled in Madison county, living for many years on a farm in the northern part of the county, now Jefferson township. Payton, formerly of this city, father of W.F. and J.W. Payton, died at his home in Guthrie Center, Thursday, the 8th. Mr. Payton was born in Union County,Ind., January 18, 1821. Married Catherine Norris August 22, 1840, in Delaware County, Ind. In 1852 he removed to Iowa, and in 1854 settled in Madison county, living for many years on a farm in the northern part of the county, now Jefferson township. Several years ago he and his sons, W.F. and J.W. Payton, removed to Winterset and engaged in the hardware business under the firm name of Wm. Payton & Co., which is still carried on by his sons, the senior member retiring in a few years and removing to Guthrie Center, which continued to be his home till his death. He united with the Methodist church in 1846 and continued a faithful and consistent member till death, a period of forty-two years. In the pioneer days in Madison county his home was house of Methodism and for some years the preaching appointment on the Northern extremity of the Winterset circuit. He was a member of the I.O.O.F. and occupied all the principal offices of the order. He leaves a window, two daughters and two sons, mentioned above. He was universally esteemed an upright and honorable citizen and a consistent Christian man. Published in the Winterset Madisonian, August 17, 1888.
