From: Lee county, IA. Probate Records, Col. 3-4, 1841-1852 At a court of Probate for the county of Lee held at Fort Madison, December 23d, 1847. In the matter of proving the Will of William Perdew, deceased. Present: Philip Viele, Judge of Probate On this day came into court, P. H. Babcock, one of the subscribing witnesses to the Will of William Perdew, deceased and prayed that the same might be admitted to Probate. It is therefore ordered on examining said witness on oath, that said Will be admitted to Probate and recorded. In the name of God, Amen. I, William Perdew Senior, of the township of Marion, County of Lee and Territory of Iowa, being mindful of my mortality and considering the uncertainty of life, do make this my last Will and Testament in manner and form following: 1st - It is my Will that my funeral expenses and all my just debts be paid. 2nd - It is my Will that the legacy left me in my Father's last Will be equally divided between five of my children as follows, Laban Perdew, Ruth Lemert, Phillip Perdew, Charity Elliott, and Mary Ann Harper. 3rd - It is my Will that William Perdew just have the money he was to pay me on a tract of land in Ohio as his full share of all my property both Real and personal. 4th - I give and devise to my son, Elkanah Perdew, my interest in the following tracts of land to wit - The west half of the North East quarter of Section No. Twenty-four (24) In Township No. Sixty-Nine (69), North Range Six (6) West - Also forty acres of timber land which was bought of William Newcomb in the aforesaid Township. 5th - And lastly, I hereby constitute and appoint Laban Perdew, my oldest son, as my Executor for this, my last Will and Testament, revoking and annulling all former Wills by me made, and ratifying and confirming this and no other to be my last Will and Testament. According to William's brother (Philip) Perdew's obituary: " The family emigrated to Coschocton county, OH., in the year 1810 and then moved from thence to Crawford county (later became Wyandot county?), OH. and settled near where the town of Benton is, in the year 1826." Hmm...
On Aug. 18, 1825, William Perdew and Rebecca Kazier were married in Coshocton, OH. by Justice of the Peace, Isaac Dicken, according to Coshocton County Marriages for 1811-1930, Volume 1.

The San Francisco Examiner (San Francisco, CA.), P. 2, Col. 5 Fri., Dec. 24, 1869 SOMETHING STRANGE BUT TRUE- The San Bernardino Guardian says: We are informed by Mr. Wm. Perdew, that there is on his son's A.G. Perdew, place in this county, a sweet potato vine covered with blossoms, between a pink and blue color, and resembling somewhat that of the morning flory, but a very different flower. This is we think the first instance on record of a sweet potato vine bearing bloom. Can any one explain, or account for it? and has any one ever heard of such a thing before? Mr. Perdew is an old farmer, and has cultivated the sweet potato all his life, but this is the first instance of the kind that has come under his knowledge. According to San Bernardino County Probate records, William Perdew died intestate (without having made a will), on Oct. 19, 1884. He was a resident of San Bernardino county at the time of his death. His personal property was valued at $800 or thereabouts. Judge: H. C. Rolfre. William's son, Alexander G. Perdew, had to petition the court with letters of administration to his estate, take an oath and file a bond according to the law in the sum of $1600. |
