San Bernardino Guardian, Oct. 22, 1870 ANOTHER ARTESIAN WELL On Saturday last, at the residence of Mr. A. L. Perdew, corner of 2nd and Utah sts., a well was bored and had reached the depth of 108 feet, where a magnificent stream of water came surging up through the pipe over 20 feet above the surface. The pipe was a 2-inch one, and it is believed that the water will play up as high as 40 feet. The flow of water could have been brought in a much larger stream but for the fear of incommoding by an overflow the neighboring premises. As it is, it is all sufficient for Mr. Perdew's purposes. The well was sunk by Mr. A. Davidson. Sam Bernardino Guardian, P.3 Jun. 17, 1871 ARTESIAN BATHS We are pleased to see that someone has fitted up a first class bathing house in San Bernardino, where cold, warm or shower baths can be had at any hour of the day or night. By referring to the advertisement, it will be seen that Mr. A. L. Perdew has just completed and opened to the public a fine bathing house, where for the moderate sum of 2 bits you can take any kind of bath. It is fitted up on his lot on the corner of 2nd and Utah Sts. The Guardian (San Bernardino, CA.), P. 2, Col. 4 Sat., Aug. 31, 1872 A Citizen of San Bernardino Robbed of $2,000. We, together with the many friends and acquaintances of Mr. A. L. Perdew, are sorry to hear of the recent misfortune befalling him at Hillsboro, Iowa. The safe in which he had all of his money deposited for safe keeping, was robbed and $1,600 in gold and $400 in greenbacks, belonging to him, carried off by the robbers. About two months ago Mr. Perdew with his family, left San Bernardino on a visit to his relatives in Iowa, expecting to be absent until the latter part of summer. Dr. Montgomery received a letter from him of the loss he had sustained, and stating that he had not money to get back home on, $11.25 which he happened to have in his pocket, was all he had left. His friends in San Bernardino deeply sympathize with him in the loss he has sustained. The Salem Register published near Hilsboro, Iowa, gives the following particulars of the robbery. One of the most daring and successful attempts at robbery that we have ever chronicled, was performed at Hillsboro, a peaceful little village situated six miles south-west of Salem on last Friday night. The facts as we learned them from Hon. Mr. Newbold are these: That not long since, Mr. Perdew, son-in-law of Col. Pope, of Hillsboro, had returned from California, bringing with him the above amount of gold and some currency. Since his arrival, he had it (the gold) deposited in the iron safe of Jordon & Co., and for some time it was reported that about five or six thousand dollars was secluded in said safe, but no fears were entertained as to the money being unsafe. The burglars first entered the blacksmith shop of Van Dorin & Wood, J. W. Elarton, the wagon shop of Mr. Davidson, and there supplied themselves with the necessary chisels, hammer and crowbars, to accomplish this bold and daring robbery. And sorry to say, bravely and fearlessly did they succeed. The safe was broken into pieces, and the above amount was taken. However they accomplished their end without anyone hearing the noise. Up to this time, no trace or suspicion of these night-owl burglars has been learned, or either has any of the money been obtained. As our space is limited we will have to defer further particulars. Perdew, an old resident of its town, was, while visiting relatives in Hillsboro, Iowa, robbed of a large sum of money. May 10, 1873 - A. L. Perdew and family return after a year long visit to Iowa. ANNIE PERDEW Reno Gazette-Journal (Reno, NV.), P. 3, Col. 3 Wed., Jan. 7, 1880 RENO ODD FELLOWS How They Provide for Strange Bretheren Who Fall Sick The following appears in the Colton Semi-Tropic: Mr. Perdew joined the San Bernardino Lodge July 29, 1868 and was one of the charter members. In 1872 he expected to leave San Bernardino and he took a withdrawal card from the lodge that he might join any other where he saw fit to locate. About a year ago he left San Bernardino with his family to settle in Reno, when he named to some of the members of the Reno lodge that he was an Odd fellow and had his withdrawal card as herein stated and intended to join one of the lodges in that place. During his short and last sickness the two lodges, viz. Reno Lodge and Truckee Lodge, rendered immediate assistance and as soon as Mr. Perdew died they called a special meeting and sent good and faithful members to assist the bereft wife and children. And, unexpected and unlooked for by Mrs. Perdew, they made up the sum of $48, paid for the coffin and interceded with the railroad company to carry her and family through to Colton at half price; which amounted to $85.50, making in all for her benefit $157. Besides many little acts that have won for them one widow's love as she bows over her little family in prayer to the great giver of all good things. The people she became acquainted with in Reno were no less kind and liberal than the Odd fellows, for they came forth to lend a helping hand in her time of need, viz. the doctors, milk man, grocer, baker and butcher all gave tokens of respect and charity. To me as an humble individual and Ancient Odd Fellow I return them a heart full of thanks and shall remember those two Lodges and people of Reno all through this life and when the portals of the other are open to review my works done here I think they will find somewhere on my book of memory, the words "charity as belong to the Lodges and people of Reno." Daily Times-Index (San Bernardino, CA.), P. 3, Col. 1 Tue., Sep. 30, 1879 On Sunday morning last, a telegram was received by Mr. F. P. Bowland of this place announcing the sudden death of Mr. A. L. Perdew at Reno, Nevada. It will be remembered by most of the citizens of this place that Mr. Perdew left here several months ago to take up his residence in Reno, hoping that a change of climate would benefit his health. He was accompanied by his family, and intended to return to San Bernardino as soon as his health was fully restored, but an all-wise Providence ordered otherwise, and he now sleeps that sleep which has no awakening. Mr. Perdew was for many years a resident of this county, and during that time made many warm and sincere friends who now extend their heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved and sorrowing family of the deceased. We understand that his remains will be forwarded to this place for burial and that his family will return to their old home.
