In his ninth year he moved with his parents to Pike Co., Ill., where he lived until September, 1884, when he with his family came to Hamilton Co., Neb., where he has ever since lived till his death, which took place Friday, Oct. 6, 1899, at 8 o’clock a.m. On the 29th day of May, 1851, he married Martha Potter. To this union was born fourteen children, eleven of which still live to mourn their loss. In the 18th year of his age the deceased united with the M. E. church as a seeker, and at the age of 22 was converted, and from the time of his conversion till his death he lived a consistent Christian life. In 1880 he joined the United Brethren church of which he continued a faithful member until death removed him from earth to Heaven. As a husband, Father Jeffers was true, gentle, kind and consistent; as a father he was kind, gentle, loving and indulgent; as a brother he was a favorite, and dearly beloved by all his brothers and sisters; as a neighbor he was accommodating, kind and highly esteemed by all who came in contact with him; as a Christian his whole life was characterized by Godly example, attending faithfully the means of Grace, establishing the family alter at his conversion, and never neglecting this means of grace until his death. He was always present at the prayer and class meetings, through fair and inclement weather, ever willing and ready to testify of God’s saving power. On Friday, October 6, 1899, a devoted wife, affectionate children, a brother and sister, sympathizing friends and relatives, were gathered about the bedside of a weary yet patient sufferer; a respected citizen, a valued friend, a kind, gentle, loving and indulgent father, a fond and faithful husband, a consistent Christian; for such, be it never forgotten, was Father William P. Jeffers. His time on earth, like the fleeting day, was hastening to its close. Medical skill, tender nursing, the sympathy of friends and loved ones, the tearful protest of his wife and children, could not avail to battle back the approaching hour of death, and at 8 o’clock in the morning the grim monster won, and the common fate of all kissed his eyelids down in sleep, which “doth knit up the raveiled sleeve of pain and worldly care,” The deceased was born in Clearmont county, December 15, 1829, having completed 69 years, 9 months and 20 days at the time of his demise. When he was 9 years old, his parents moved to Pike county, Illinois. He was united in marriage May 29, 1857, to Martha Potter. Fourteen children were born, eleven of whom are living and were present at his death. He, with his family, emigrated to Hamilto county, in September 1884, where he has resided ever since. From a child he was always a favorite with his brothers and sisters and dearly loved by them. His whole life was characterized by Godly example, attending faithfully on the means of grace, establishing the family altar at his conversion, and never neglecting this means of grace until death. He was always present in the prayer and class-meetings, through fair and inclement weather; ever willing and ready to testify of God’s saving power. In his 18th year he united with M. E. church as a seeker of religion and was converted at the age of 22, and joined the United Brethren church in 1880. He was a consistent and worthy member of the U. B. church at Prairie Gem, in which his funeral was preached by Rev. Zimmerman assisted by Rev. Oesch and Rev. Fye, on October 8th, at 11 a.m. His remains were laid to rest in the cemetery close by, followed by the largest concourse of friends ever witnessed at the Gem. Shall he be left forgotten in the dust, When fate, relenting, bids the flower revive? Shall nature’s voice, to man alone unjust, Bid him, the doomed, to perish, yet hope to live? Is it for this, virtue oft must strive ‘Gainst disappointment, penury and pain? No! the eternal day of Heaven shall yet arrive, And, Father Jeffers, thou shalt live again.
