Description	:	Mr. William Piper, one of the old-timers of Red Deer, passed to his rest on Thursday morning in his 80th year after a lingering illness. Mr. Piper was a man of vigorous will and strong constitution and enjoyed excellent health up to last year when he had a serious attack of pneumonia followed by rheumatism under which strain the stomach gave out. Read More	Mr. William Piper, one of the old-timers of Red Deer, passed to his rest on Thursday morning in his 80th year after a lingering illness. Mr. Piper was a man of vigorous will and strong constitution and enjoyed excellent health up to last year when he had a serious attack of pneumonia followed by rheumatism under which strain the stomach gave out. He was able to be round the house at times, and seemed to be in better fettle than usual on Wednesday, but severe pain came on later in the evening, and he passed away at 4:45 in the morning. Mr. Pipers closing days were watched over and cheered by the devoted ministrations of Mrs. Piper, and his family in the district and old friends were also assiduous in their attentions. Mr. Piper came from the North of Ireland and lived for years in Middlesex County, Western Ontario, in the famous Lucan district, where he was trusted by Orangemen and Catholic alike, despite the bitter feuds of that district which culminated later in the famous Biddulph tragedy. He served in the Fenian Raid troubles of 1866, and won the medal. He came to Red Deer in the spring of 1892 from Perry Sound, Ont., and established a brick industry here which he continued, either with his family or with associates, up to the war. Mr. Piper was an energetic, public-spirited, citizen, always ready to speak his mind, and to give a reason for the faith that was in him. In civic affairs he took a keen interest and served part of a term on the Council. But perhaps his chief service was to the Loyal Orange Association, of which he was the main prop in this district for years. He held the highest county and provincial offices, being Past Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Alberta, L.O.A.B.A. A strong Protestant, an independent Conservative, a loyal member of the Church of England, a charter member of Red Deer Lodge, A.F. & A.M., he was tolerant and broadminded in his actions as a neighbor and citizen, and he was held in the highest respect by all classes. The family surviving are Mrs. Piper, Mr. Frank Piper and Mrs. D.F. Urquhart, Balmoral, and Mr. Lynn Ross Piper, an adopted son, just back from overseas. The Red Deer Advocate, Friday, August 22nd, 1919 --------- Son of Charles Piper and Margaret Armstrong. Margaret died in Ireland, and Charles later married Elizabeth Ardel. William married Sarah Ann Frank (1838-1878) on August 9, 1864, in Middlesex County, Ontario. He later married Mary Porter.
