The news of Mr. Porath's death was received with sorrow in this community, where he was so well known and so highly esteemed. His death was caused by a severe attack of lagrippe. There were not many who knew of his last illness until they heard of his death, although it was known that he had been gradually falling for some time. When the dawn of Memorial Day broke in roseate beauty his spirit had left its frail tenement of clay and pissed into the great beyond. Ernest Frederick William Porath was one of the self made men of Buena Vista county, where he has resided continuously since 1871. His home is situated in section 15, Newell township. Mr. Porath was born in Pomen province in the kingdom of Prussia Feb. I8, 1837. He acquired a common school education in Prussia and worked there at day's labor but thinking to find better business advantages in the new world, sailed for America in 1868. He worked on the railroads near Milwaukee for two years in 1871 came to Newell and secured employment in Stevens' Hotel, and where he continued for four and a half years. By industry and economy he was enabled to purchase eighty acres in Newell township, constituting a part of his present farm. Since that time he has extended the boundaries of his home place until it now comprises four hundred and eighty acres of finely improved land. On Jan. 18, 1880, Mr. Porath was married to Gustave Johnson. Unto Mr. and Mrs. Porath have been born eleven children: William F., Ella, Edward, Charles, Emil, John, Alexander, Anna, Amelia, Harry and Frederick. Mr. Porath was one of the best known citizens of this community, and was esteemed by a large circle of friends. A feeling of sadness fills our heart when we remember that we shall see "Uncle Billy's" kindly" smiling face no more. We recall the many favors we have received from him, and regret that we did not have more opportunities to reciprocate. He was our friend, kind hearted and considerate, and we shall miss him as the days and the months pass by. The sense of loss caused by his death will be felt not only in the home but in the community in which he bore such a prominent part. His work is done and well done. His busy life has reached its close, its burdens and cares are laid down, and in the tranquil sleep of death he is waiting for the joy and peace of the life beyond. Mr. Porath is survived by his wife and eleven children named above, two brothers, August and Charles Porath, besides other relatives. The funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon, June 1. A short service in German was held a t the home at two o'clock and later a more complete service in English was held at the Congregational church. Both services were conducted by Rev. E. A. Brauer, or Storm Lake. There was a very large attendance of sympathizing friends and neighbors. Appropriate music was furnished by the Congregational choir. The pall bearers were Wm. Ellrich, J. T.
