He gradually failed from the first attack at noon of the preceding Wednesday until the end came. Having been stricken away from home, it was a great comfort to him and his family that he rallied enough to be brought home Friday. Mr. Porter was one of a family of nine children born to John and Frances Ascough Porter. He was a native of New York, having been born at Rochester Sept. 17, 1847. When he was seven years of age the family removed to Iowa and settled near Ozark, in Jackson county. When they reached Dubuque the family belongings were driven overland to their new home. Three years later they removed to South Hopkinton and in 1860 to Buck Creek in Delaware county, where the home remained until 1893 with the exception of one year, when they lived in Hazel Green township. After moving to Hopkinton Mr. Porter engaged in the implement business. In recent years he had busied himself with the care of his two farms, which he had owned since a young man. Mr. Porter was married at Buck Creek, March 31, 1875, to Miss Lucetta Griess, with whom he had lived with endearing love through these more than fifty-five years. Their home was blessed by the birth of one son, the Rev. V. Porter, of Manchester. Three years ago, last March at the home of his son at Eldora, the golden wedding of this husband and wife was fittingly celebrated. Mr. Porter is also survived by three brothers, Henry Porter, Manchester, John Fletcher Porter, Albion, Neb., and Edda A. Porter of Deer Creek, Minn. There are also many nieces and nephews with their families who are sorrowing at the loss caused by his passing. He was lifelong member of the Methodist Episcopal church, for years had been an honored member of the official board of the local church. He was recongized and respected in the community as a man of sterling integrity and unquestioned honor. He was a member of the city council of Hopkinton for four successive terms, retiring only after the burden of years made it difficult for him to serve the town. He assisted in securing and laying out the east extension of the cemetery where his body was laid to rest. The funeral service was held Wednesday afternoon in the Methodist Episcopal church, the pastor, Rev. H. E. Wilcox, officiating. Contributor: (48278241)
