Description	:	John Fletcher Porter was born in Jackson county, Iowa, December 3, 1858, one of a family of nine children born to John and Frances Ascough Porter, and passed away on Aug. 16, 1943, at St. Mary’s hospital in Columbus, Nebr., after a brief illness, at the age of 84 years, eight months and 13 days. Read More	John Fletcher Porter was born in Jackson county, Iowa, December 3, 1858, one of a family of nine children born to John and Frances Ascough Porter, and passed away on Aug. 16, 1943, at St. Mary’s hospital in Columbus, Nebr., after a brief illness, at the age of 84 years, eight months and 13 days. On Febr. 16, 1882, he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Ellen Houston of Hazel Green, Delaware county, Iowa. To this union were born nine children, five sons and four daughters, all of whom survive except one son, Roy E., who passed away on Aug. 8, 1915. His wife preceded him in death on Aug. 24, 1922. He made his first trip to Boone county, Nebraska, with a team and wagon in the spring of 1879 and bought the home farm south of Albion which he owned at the time of his death. The team and wagon were traded in on the farm as part payment. He then walked to the Pinnacle Hill neighborhood to visit a friend, passing only two sod houses on the way. He returned to Iowa. In the spring of 1887 he and his family moved to Boone county to make their home and he has been here continuously since that time. Mr. Porter was converted early in life and joined the Methodist church. He was a splendid man in every way, kindly, genuine, honest, generous, thoroughly good; a loving father, always thinking of the welfare of his family. He leaves to mourn his passing the eight children, Mrs. Frances Donaldson, Charles W., John A., Fred K., of Albion, Bert V. of Marathon, Ia., Mrs. Mable Bowman of Boone, and Ruby and May at home. Sixteen grandchildren, three great grandchildren; one brother E. A. Porter, of Deer Creek, Minn., and a number of nieces and nephews besides his children survive him. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church in Albion, Thursday afternoon, Aug. 19, at 2:30. Rev. L. N. Blough and Rev. R. A. Trowbridge officiated. Interment was made in Rose Hill cemetery.
