He grew up on the family farm with two brothers, Joseph and Merle (Casey) and two sisters. Pearl (Champlin) and Opal (Schleimer). He was an avid baseball player, playing the last game at age 46. May 13, 1937, he married Cecilia Schleimer and they were parents of two children, William Raymond (Bill) of Persia and LaVonne Marie Picket of Omaha. For some years he drove a truck for his brother-in-law, Marvin Champlin, and he also worked for the Persia Coop for almost 30 years. He died Aug. 19, 1995 at Westmont Care Center in Logan where he had lived since 1988, after suffering a stroke. Survivors include his wife, Cecilia, of Westmont Care Center; one son, William (Sharon) of Persia; one daughter, LaVonne Fickel of Omaha; one brother, Merle (Verda) Fitzgerald of Persia; seven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Services were held at Schumacher Funeral Home in Persia Aug. 22, 1995 with Elder LeRoy Cave, officiating. Honorary casket bearers were Alfred Smith and Duane Kemmish. Burial was in Valley View Cemetery with Howard arid Marvin Thraen, Raymond and Donald Schleimer, Harold Keim and Loren Ferry, casket bearers. Schumacher Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
