While the actual village of birth is unconfirmed as either Holthusen or Stapelmoor, Willem was christened in Wolthusen, Ostfriesland. His parents were Reemt Siems and Moeder Willems Sterenberg of Stapelmoor. Willem immigrated with his brother Uhlderk/Ulrick in 1852 as one of the early Ostfriesen immigrants to German Valley, Stephenson County IL.
