On Wednesday, the 22nd of March, 1876, one of our mosst [sic] esteemed and worthy citizens of this county closed life’s fitful dream and passed over to the Summer land, Mr. William Reeve; aged 78 years, 10 months. He died suddenly from heart disease, and left a widow 78 years of age. Loved by all who knew him, it can truly be said, that “he fought the good fight, he has finished his work,” and like the weary wanderer at the end of a long and dangerous journey, he has reached home and laid down to rest.– Agency Independent. ------------------------------------------ An estate was probated in Wapello County for William on March 22, 1876, and it was reopened again for probate on January 16, 1885. As of January 15, 2019, I have found all but two of the children of William and Susan and sent edit requests to link them to their parents. I have not found the death dates or burial places for Lydia Augle/Augell. A January 1885 list of heirs in William's estate, shows that she was then living in Athens, Ohio. According to information found in ancestry.com, Lucretia Murphy died December 1, 1912, in McConnelsville, Morgan County, Ohio, but I do not know her place of burial. William is not listed in the WPA readings of Agency Cemetery. There was a receipt in his estate for $24.00 paid to M.B. Root for a gravestone. (This would have been Moses B. Root, a stonecarver from Ottumwa.) When the WPA did their readings, they either missed it, or his gravestone was gone by then. I believe that William was buried here in this cemetery. His wife and several of his children are buried here. In his estate, along with receipts for burial clothes and a coffin, there was also a receipt dated March 25, 1876, for $2.50, received of James Reeve from the City of Agency for digging a grave for William Reeve, and I have posted a copy of this receipt here on this memorial. Agency Cemetery is the only cemetery in the small city of Agency. There is an article about William and Susan's son William Reeve and his family on Page 318 of, "History of Wapello County and Representative Citizens," Edited and Compiled by Capt. S.B. Evans. This book was published by the Biographical Publishing Company of Chicago, Illinois, in 1901, and is now in the public domain, where the article may be read online. Included in this article is this paragraph about William's parents: "William Reeve, the father of our subject, was born in New York State in 1797, and during his youth learned the trade of a cooper. He removed to Wapello county, Iowa, in 1851, and on March 22d of that year purchased a farm in Agency township, on which he resided until his death. He married Susan Murphy, and they reared the following children: Sarah; James A., deceased; Mary A.; Lydia, deceased; Lucretia J.; William, the subject of this sketch; Joseph; Susanah; Caroline; and Minerva." This list agrees with the children named in William’s estate, except his son Joseph is not mentioned. Even though Joseph is not shown as deceased in this 1901 article, he did die in 1860, and is probably not mentioned in the estate since it does not appear that he ever married or had children; therefore, he would have no heirs. According to the probate, William had the following children: James A. Reeve, who was the administrator of the estate; William Reeve Jr.; Lydia Augell (Husband Hector Augell); Lucretia J. Murphy (Husband Marion Murphy); Mary J. Ullrich (Husband George Ullrich); Miriam Jay (Husband J.H. Jay); Susan Pickerell (Husband Benjamin Pickerell; Susan’s name is spelled Pickerel on her gravestone); Caroline Smith, deceased; and Sarah Miller, deceased. The children of Caroline Smith and Sarah Miller are also listed as heirs.
